Oh, what a night! Wednesday Nights during the summer will find a number of car enthusiasts at the weekly Motor City Steel Customer Appreciation Night, ( See my shop tour article for more on Motor City Steel) but this was a very special event. It highlighted Pontiac muscle cars of the 60s and in particular, the GTO. Along with a fabulous collection of muscle cars, hot rods and race cars was a special presentation by Jim Wagners, entitled Anatomy of a Muscle Car: Ancestors and offspring. Jim, who recently celebrated his 80th birthday is credited with being the advertising genius behind Pontiac and the Detroit muscle car movement. Referred to as the Godfather of the GTO, he spearheaded the advertising for the GTO and other Pontiac performance cars. He is also credited, through his advertising campaigns, of taking racing off the track and putting it on the street. A great story teller and walking encyclopedia of that era, Jim has written a very informative book entitled, Glory Days: When Horsepower and Passion Ruled Detroit. This is must reading for any muscle car fan. Robert Steinhaus
