Syracuse Nationals Preview

Jim Clark

Jim Clark, Hot Rod MD

By Jim Clark (The Hot Rod MD, Tex Smith Hot Rod Library author/partner and Syracuse hometown boy)

If you are a hot rod enthusiast living in the Northeastern corner of the US you won’t want to miss the biggest get-together of hot rods on the Right Coast. The Syracuse Nationals has become the don’t-miss event of the summer since 1999 when the inaugural event took place. We at Hot Rod Library have been a vendor there since the beginning offering our Tex Smith how-to books and now Ron Covell metalworking DVDs.

The print media and Hotrod Hotline’s field reporters all cover the event, highlighting the highest profile cars from the more than 6800 vehicles entered in the event. However in addition to these high profile cars there are literally thousands of fine hot rods and special interest cars to inspect up-close and personally.

Last year I was able to escape from my vendors booth for a couple of hours and check out some of the vehicles spread out across the huge New York State Fairgrounds where this event is held in July every year. As a greybeard with decades of buying and selling cars that I should have kept, I saw many examples of vehicles like the ones that I wish I still owned. Included here are photos of some of those vehicles and others that I found of special interest.

This year’s edition of the Syracuse Nationals is coming up July 18, 19 & 20, 2008 at the spacious 365 acre New York State Fairgrounds. So don’t miss your opportunity to join the more than 78,000 thousand attendees and more than 6800 vehicles on display. Partake of the many activities and maybe take your own tour down memory lane.

'48 Ford convert

'52 Merc-This ’52 Merc two-door is similar to my first car, a’53 Merc 4-door and the ’54 Merc 2-door that I drove while dating my wife of 45-years. They were both modified more than this one but probably not this nice.

'59 Buick

'60 T-bird -In ’58 Ford abandoned the Thunderbird two-seater concept and introduced a 4-passenger version. I owned a ’59 that looked much the same as this ’60 Thunderbird that was on display there.

'61 T-bird-In ’61 the Thunderbird was completely restyled. This is a low-miles (61,000) survivor in outstanding condition.

'62 Vette-First generation ‘Vettes are favorites of many hot rodders. I was fortunate to own one just like this outstanding red roadster back in 1964.

'62 Vette-

'69 Camaro -This rare ’69 Camaro t-top owned by Richard & Deb Young of Central Square, NY is an excellent example of the later model cars that make up the variety of great cars on display.
