The movie “American Graffiti” and TV show “Happy Days” are both anthems for hot rod and ‘50s / ‘60s enthusiasts because they feature cars and music from the era. Attend a street rod event in most any part of the planet and you will hear music and see cars that look like they just drove off the screen from one of these. Groups playing music from the era are often the featured entertainment. So when hot rod enthusiasts get the opportunity to meet some of the stars from the movie or TV show they line up and wait their turn.
This was the case at this year’s Syracuse Nationals. Both young and old lined up all three days to meet, get an autographed picture, autographed replica of the ’55 Chevy from “Graffiti” and get their picture taken with Cindy Williams a star from “American Graffiti” and “Shirley” from the TV series “Laverne & Shirley” and Henry Winkler from the movie “Lords of Flatbush” and “The Fonz” from “Happy Days”. Some even brought their DVD case from the movie or TV program to have it signed.
In addition to the activities mentioned above Cindy and Henry also did radio and TV interviews and an interview for the Right Coast Association video that Right Coast produces each year.
We witnessed the activities first-hand from our vendors booth “Hot Rod Library/Hotrod Hotline” located directly across from them. They both stopped by for a brief visit and photo-opp with my wife Freda and I before heading off to their next event “Hot August Nights in Reno, NV where they will be joined by Richard Dreyfus, another star from “American Graffiti” and other top movie roles.
