Parked on a bluff overlooking Moonlight Beach in Encinitas, California, are lots of cars made of wood. Back in the mid-20’s, Henry Ford believed people needed a vehicle to take them to and from the train station. He designed the “Station Wagon”. He grew all the wood being used in his current production cars, which was being replaced with steel. In order to use his forests of wood he decided to make the new “Station Wagon” out of his wood, and the “Woodie” was born. 29 years ago the San Diego Woodies Club started this annual event that has grown

into the “largest of all Woodie meets”. Generally, 1953 is considered the end of production of American Woodies, but British versions went to 1960.

Moonlight Beach in Encinitas, California has been the site of Wavecrest for the last 16 years. The weather was sunny and warm, about mid 70’s. The tranquil setting was full of approximately 290 Woodies and was crowded with interesting spectators. They come to this event for one of two reasons, the unique cars or the unique wood. Many of these beautifully crafted cars have used rare and exotic woods in their restoration.
