With my son, Mike, as the clutch man/starter on the Mike McCain ‘Bomb Squad’ funny car, driven by the ace Mendy Fry, most of my time was spent in the pit with the gang...a highlight for the team was inviting the ‘Saintsmotorsports’ team from Santa Maria High School to watch the team in action, even to the point of actually involving two members to assist, working side by side with the team, removing heads, maintaining the body and going to the line with the car...an experience not soon forgotten!
Friday night’s ceremony included selected cars for the cacklefest held at the Doubletree, while Saturday evening’s ‘Cacklefest’, one of the highlights of the weekend, had upwards of 100 nitro burning cars lined up on the strip, an awesome sight!
Hundreds of vintage race cars, as well as hot rods and street rods were assembled throughout the grounds, many parked in ‘The Grove’, where plaques can be found on each tree, honoring members of the racing family…
Add to this the many vendors and swap meet, and you’ve got a must go event...see you next year!
