36th ANNUAL
TOYOTA GRAND PRIX OF LONG BEACH
APRIL 16-18, 2010
Story and Photos By James Drew

The 36th LBGP is now history….  This year’s Race and Beach Party was just fantastic!

For the pure racing enthusiast there was plenty of action on the race track every day.  There was also many familiar names on the roster this year.  “Andretti” was one of the names we see year after year,  this one being Marco, son of Michael Andretti. Michael Andretti was inducted into the Walk of Fame on Pine Ave Thursday. Graham Rahal was on the track too, driving for Sarah Fisher racing. His Dad, Bobby Rahal, was inducted last year!

The first day, Friday, April 16th had most of the series entries getting some time on the track with time trials. It was also qualifying time for the celebrities, and for those in the American Le Mans Series. Both had races on Saturday. Also on the bill were the World Challenge Series, Firestone Indy Lights and exhibition runs by crowd favorite Drifting. .

WSC hit the track first early Saturday morning, then team drifting three cars at a time. The stars of the show were the IRL entries, with names Like Helio Castroneves, Scott Dixon, 2009 race winner Champion Dario Franchitti, Tony Kanaan and Dan Wheldon, along with seventeen others vying for a spot in the winners circle. Danica Patrick was joined by two other female driver’s, Milka Duno and rookie Simona De Silvestro.

“Celebrities" were the big show on Saturday and the fans turned out in droves to cheer, hoping to get an autograph and maybe talk with their favorite star!  This was an exciting race as actor Brian Austin Green finished less than a second before Star of Chuck TV, Zachary Levi and Academy Award Winner Adrien Brody. Former CART Champion Jimmy Vasser finished first overall to win the Pro category. The action came to life when someone stuffed a car in the tire barrier of the wall, and all you hear is noise as the pro Jimmy Vasser moves celebrities out of his way one by one. Vasser started 25th and moved his way up. Green would be Vasser’s last victim to pass as Green tried to stay in front but came up just one lap short of being overall number one. Everybody wants to win this race, be it a star or a pro driver!

The big show, the IZOD Indy cars hit the grid as the pre race ceremonies were finishing up and while the crowds were continuing to pack into the race track. The race had the fans on the edge of their seats as Will Power in his Verizon Penske would lead the first 18 laps but then 2nd place runner Ryan Hunter-Reay in his IZOD Andretti Autosport racer & 3rd place Justin Wilson in his Dreyer & Reinbold Z Line got by powers as his Penske got stuck in first gear at the hair pin. Both Reay & Wilson pulled away from Powers. Hunter-Reay took the checkered flag 5.6031 seconds ahead of runner-up Justin Wilson to win the 36th Annual Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach IZOD IndyCar Series race. Will Power finished 3rd. Scott Dixon was fourth and Tony Kanaan fifth.

LBGP Association President/CEO Jim Michaelian got perfect weather every day of this year’s race. The race has become one of the largest annual sporting events in Southern California. Jim said, “Without the 1500 volunteers and and all the others that help put on the race every year, we are able to give the fans the most bang for their dollar”.

I was at the very first one of these races on the streets of Long Beach years ago. I have seen the town change from a Navy town to what it is today and I am impressed every time I have gone to the LBGP over the last 36 years and I have all ready marked the dates down for next year’s race on the streets of Long Beach for the 37th, APRIL 15-17, 2011!

Until the next race I cover for HotRodHotLine.com I will see u at a Car show or race track somewhere on the west coast soon!
