It is hard to believe this was the 10th annual Lone Star Round Up and although a lot has changed through the years the goal was always the same, put on a great show in a place where like-minded folks can gather with lots of traditional hot rods and customs. Austin, Texas is that place and the Lone Star Round Up is that show and many would agree that it is the best car show in the country.
I have driven the same car to Austin every year and I know first-hand all the trials and tribulations that go along with driving to events in other cities or even states for that matter. The real story about the Round Up starts months before, as people begin builds on cars and trucks that they plan to drive to the show, some are just trying to complete a project already started while others are simply giving their rides a once over before the trip. Following all this controlled chaos as well as being right in the middle of it myself is a bit overwhelming but the whole process and the adventure that follows is the story and very much worth all that one has to endure to get to a show like the Lone Star Round Up.
The moment you are blasting down the highway the body and mind relaxes and the senses come alive as you take in the scenery. Stopping for photos and even filling up with gas as you talk with curious lookers kind of gives you a nice tingly feeling and a few ounces of pride. Although the distance traveled varies for everyone the experience is quiet the same.
Once you roll into the capital city and cruise down Congress to checkout all the hot rods and customs everywhere you soon forget about all the other stuff. When you arrive at the gates of the Lone Star Round Up and are sitting in line to enter you notice your busted knuckles and grease stained hands gripping the wheel of something you created the months prior, as you stare at them and your mind races through everything up to this point you realize that there is no one in front of you and the guy at the gate is waving you in. This is it, accomplishment is setting in, you have made it to the event the whole world talks about and the Lone Star Round Up is about to begin and you are there!
