January 28th the Santa Maria High School Saints Motorsports Racing Team held the 2nd Annual Car Show & BBQ at, where else, the campus…giving the supporters an opportunity to meet the 2012 Racing Team as well as the new for 2012 ‘All Girls’ drag racing team.
Under the guidance of local racers Art Foster and Lorin Cuthbert, with many area drag racers also volunteering, the students involved work directly with the race cars, although the driving is handled by an experienced driver, who is often an alumnus of the class. The students must maintain a high grade average to participate in the program, which has a large waiting list to join. The students compete side by side with seasoned pros in the five race season planned for 2012.
With the outstanding support of the racing community, there were ten drag racing cars at the show, as well as one of the most famous drag racing boats in history, Don Edwards Golden Kommotion; Stormy Byrd’s Revelation modified fuel roadster, Larry O’Freia’s Valley Head Service ’57 along with several others including jr. dragsters fired up for an impromptu ‘cacklefest’ to the enjoyment of the many fans on hand…’clutch girl.com’ Michelle Read even jumped in the famed Cagle/Newhouse roadster to ‘cackle’ it as well; add to this a hundred cars in the show and you have an event that raised the much needed funds from the entrants and fans as well as from the many professional drag racers including ‘Fast’ Jack Beckman, Larry Dixon, bob Bode and others that donated goodies to the auction…a success for all involved…
