Created by many who were there, this book chronicles the Rebel Decade - perhaps water sports most exciting and dangerous era.
Here are the racing legends who reigned in the heyday of hot boat builders, drivers and crews. These were the mavericks who pushed the limits of speed on water, determined to be the first to smoke-the-water with the sleekest, most dynamic, thunderous, fire breathin', rooster tail spittin' gas and blown nitro wood flat bottoms and hydros in drag boat racing.

Featured are racing legends Larry Schwabenland, Ray Caselli, Gary Gabelich, Dwight Bale, Rene Andre Maddox, and hot boat builders Rich Hallett, Sanger Jack Davidson, Rudy Ramos. Also included are engine builders Keith Black, Dave Zeuschel, Ed Pink, and Louis Unser. Plus many others who reigned in the early days of drag boat racing.

About the Authors

Don Edwards is owner and driver of the 1967 World’s Winningest Gas Hydro drag boat Golden Komotion. Through the years he has never lost his enthusiasm and friendship of those he knew during his racing years. Today he enjoys coordinating racers reunions and boat shows in California as well as restoring an original Hallett wood drag hydro. Don lives with his wife, Lydia, in the Santa Ynez Valley, California.

Barry McCown, owner and driver of the sensational award winning BANZAI drag hydro in which he held the quarter mile blown fueler record in 1963. In the 1970s Barry built and raced successfully in off-shore powerboat competitions. He currently lives in Carlsbad, California.

Writer/Filmmaker Bob Silva was introduced to motor racing at the tender age of two, when he accompanied his parents to the weekly auto races at California’s Oakland Speedway. His father, Eddie Silva, drove inboard hydroplanes built by grandfather Al Silva, competing on the West Coast racing circuit from 1952-1972. In 1968, Bob joined the family racing team, driving hydroplanes until the family retired from competition in 1974.

About this Book

Drag Boats of the 60s is a first edition soft cover book, published September 15, 2008, with a glossy cover and is printed on high-quality, glossy paper. The cover shows a color photograph on a high-gloss heavy bond paper. The book is 128 pages in length with both color and black and white photographs.

The text gives a very good description of what it was like to go boat racing in the “Rebel Decade”. This is a must have book for the Boat Racing fan.

Larry Schwabenland driving Ed Willis’ Mr. Ed in 1966, Willis was the first owner to run the 18-foot “Junior” Sanger in BFH Class, winning 22 races and both the APBA and NDBA Nationals. The hull was later sold, renamed Crisis, and on September 13, 1969, became the world’s fastest propeller driven boat, hitting 200.44 mph.

Towed to the races by a black 1952 Cadillac hearse, Mortician was co-owned by Tom Morgan, Bill Clark and Buzz Coates. Fitted with tandem Chevys, the 18foot Stevens dominated the UFF record books in 1965-66. On nitro, Mortician’s time with a pair of 427s was 132.24 mph. Spike Morelli faithfully restored her in 2007.

Don Edwards had good reason to smile at this modesto, California meet as he trophied in blown gas hydro, top hydro and was the day’s top eliminator, at 131 mph, with Golden Komotion. Helping Don show his winning wares are Donny Mueller and Mike Huckabey.

The master of the Flat Bottoms, Ray Caselli, ran a 398 c.i. Chrysler built by the master of Hemis, Dave Zeuschel, in his record holding BFF Panic Mouse III. Caselli, noted for his quick jumps off the starting line, or “hole shots”, had many driving speed secrets for eliminating the competition.
