Offy America’s Greatest Racing Engine
By Kenneth E. Walton

Historical Perspective

Although its primary focus targets a racing engine nick-named Offy, this historical reflection transcends traditional perceptions of motorsport. It addresses the dynamics of a time-honored right in the United States pursuit of the proverbial “American dream” in our free enterprise system.

In the 1960’s, Drake Engineering and Sales - the miniscule shop producing the Offy - accomplished an amazing feat. It was achieved through the support of several key suppliers and the loyal assistance of their relentless die-hard racing customers. These racing veterans resurrected the Offy from the depths of near extinction at the hands of its toughest competitive adversary ever.

On paved-oval (mile or longer) race tracks across the United States, the Offy

humbled the Ford Motor Company’s “all-conquering” Quadcam V-8’s. Never before, or since, in the anals of motorsport, has resilience of such magnitude been recorded.
