ANAHEIM, CA., Jan. 24 - Scott Dobson, a two-time main event winner last year in the NMRA-TQ Midget Series, won a 20-lap non-point, NMRA-TQ Midget exhibition race on a tenth-mile dirt track Saturday night at Angel Stadium, home of the major leaglue baseball Angels. The 34-year old 2008 NMRA championship driver runner-up from Newbury Park drove Guy Barber's No.18 Stewart/Honda. The NMRA teams again were part of the supporting events before the main attraction---the monster truck event on the dirt track that covered the baseball field grass. As usual more than 40,000 fans of the huge trucks packed the stadium.
The six NMRA-TQ Midget teams present ran a ten-lap heat race at 5:30 pm and the six-car 20-lap TQ main event at 6:05 before the monster truck series drivers began their usual fan-pleasing events. Bruce Hiroshima won the heat race from pole position over 17-year old newcomer Dakota Schweitzer, from Bakersfield. The main event lineup had Hiroshima and Schweitzer in the front row, followed by Dobson, West Evans, Dave Lambert and Ron Ahrendt. Dobson was in front at the checkered flag in a photo finish over Hiroshima. Evans, Schweitzer, Ahrendt and Lambert were right on the tails of the two leaders on a cool, but not cold evening.
NMRA teams participated in the annual pit party for spectators from 2:30 to 5:00 pm in the pits outside the stadium. Rain stopped at 2:00. An estimated 12,000 people checked the racing cars and trucks in the pits before they competed. Rain made the dirt oval sloppy, but a good time was had by all according to NMRA leader West Evans.
Summary:
Heat race, 10-laps: Bruce Hiroshima, Scott Dobson, West Evans, Dakota Schweitzer, Dave Lambert, Ron Ahrendt.
Main event, 20-laps: Dobson, Hiroshima, Evans, Svchweitzer, Ahrendt, Lambert. ####
