President's Corner: We're here to gather and relay stories about land speed racing, nothing more and nothing less. Relating the stories is something else again. How many times have you been somewhere and seen something and later hear a story about it and end up scratching your head and saying to yourself that's BS or I didn't see that. It happens all the time and will continue until there are no human beings left. Everybody has a different perspective on what goes on and relating all sides is what we're about and as historians we want to hear all the sides. Some things we can quantify like so and so ran 187.425 mph at the two mile and have the timing slip to prove it or the tires on the car were Goodyear Front Runners because we have pictures. Other things aren't so easy like was the car blood red, red, dark orange or tangerine. Or was a picture taken at 4:30 on Tuesday or 3:58 on Tuesday. We have to be philosophical on some things as it's not worth getting shot over. The last time I checked this is still America so if you want to call somebody a jerk, or have a different opinion, it's your right to say and think it. If a guy’s been dead for twenty years and you want to call him an Ass and he was one that's one thing, but if they're still around try and be cool with you words or we just won't publish them. Naturally some things slip by us, so if your shorts get all bunched up try and settle your differences one on one and leave the forum out of it, we ain't the bad guys. Richard and I are serious about saving history and with it comes truth and a little dirt. We don't publish the dirt part but we do the truth part. We've also found out that some people don't like the truth part and in the past have been bullied to omit things. We continue to bring you what's on everybody's mind hopefully in a non-biased way because we love all things racing but the next time somebody slips a rotten egg into our basket the Newsletter may just disappear and then everyone will lose. As everyone knows land speed racers keep getting faster and faster. At the World Finals we had a Model-T powered stream-liner that ran over 200 mph and a hi-boy that broke 300 mph. Who would of thunk it. Before that at Cook's meet, there were four 400 mph cars and a 395 mph bike. These days one can also say land speed racing is now on everybody's bucket list as a must do thanks to our spec racing is not spoken here heritage. Let's hope it stays that way for another hundred years. The lucky ones will discover that land speed racing is not a bucket thing but a lifestyle.

Editorial: I’m expecting a report on the Legends of Ascot, Bonneville and the California Hot Rod Reunion. The racing season is winding down and club parties and award banquets are next in line. I never identified the issues of the newsletter with Volume and Issue numbers. I simply numbered them consecutively, therefore this is Issue #180 and since I try and send them out once a week, we can assume that we are somewhere around 3 and years from our first issue to this one. I mention this because it has been my experience that volunteers usually last about 5 years before they are asked to step down or they leave of their own desire. It’s time to look for and train the next generation of leaders for the Society of Land Speed Racing Historians. At least we should have some back-up people who are trained and ready to step in. Jim Miller is still a kid, looking forward to receiving Social Security someday, but I’m definitely over the hill. There are reasons to have redundancy built into a program. Having capable people ready to take over keeps a program from experiencing a lull or a discontinuation, which is exactly what happened when my computer went down. It also helps to have fresh and new ideas from the editorial board. Jim and I will get together and try and expand the SLSRH to more of our readers and we hope, to more volunteers. We have not had a lot of problems here at the SLSRH. In fact, for the amount of words and issues published, there have been few problems. But once in awhile we do receive complaints and questions about our competence. Jim and I treat these issues seriously. We really do care about hot rodding and we don’t want to injure anyone by our words or actions. But we do a great deal of volume and often we let things slip by our view that causes harm. When that happens we apologize and retract the errors as quick as we can. In the two situations to date, in the last four years, one was our direct fault and another was in poor editing of a letter received. We didn’t anticipate either of these incidents causing any problems. I’ve been told that we did not have to do anything legally to resolve the issue, but that is not the way we work here at the SLSRH. It isn’t enough to simply be legally protected, or “even in the right.” We want the newsletter to be better than that and to not only cause no harm, but to be always vigilant in respecting the feelings of the hot rodding community. It may be a task too great to measure up to, but we still want to try.

“How long would you like the book review to be?” A SLSRH member. Readers: The following email was received and it is an important topic. Jim and I need as many volunteers as we can get and we really appreciate those that can do book reviews. They can be as long or as short as you want them to be. I will by-pass the Gone Racin' byline and submit it directly to www.hotrodhotline.com, book review section and publish it in www.landspeedracing.com. I like stories and reviews to be as long as possible and to have as much detail as possible, but you don't have to tell the story, just touch on the basics of the book. Read a few of mine or others at the website to get a feeling for what we do. Try to be fair, pointing out flaws as well as successes. If the book lacks an index, mention that for all good books deserve to have an index. If you want to do more reviews we will publish all of them. If you want to do a book review on a book that has already been reviewed, that is fine too, especially if the reviews differ. Reviews are like stories and they tell historians a great deal. Avoid any writing that may be litigious. We have had few complaints over the years, but they do arise. I find that I can tell a negative in a positive way that people can accept. If the reviewer has a positive view of the book then that is fine. But if you have negatives about the book, write them in a factual way. Positives can be expressed through an opinion, but negatives need to always be approached in a very clinical and factual way. Such as this, "The book lacked an index and that makes it harder for the average reader to find photos and names of people that he is looking for." www.hotrodhotline.com accepts book reviews from all sources and is glad to have them. We are all volunteers though and there is no revenue to pay for reviews. However, if any of our members enjoy doing book reviews and want to get your opinion out there for the readers, please write as many as you wish. I've done 60 and I haven't even begun to tap the worthy (and unworthy) books that desperately need reviews, so we welcome your help. Also, the websites accept movie and magazine reviews too. I really like the movie reviews and sometimes I do them with Roger Rohrdanz. We are like Siskel and Ebert and we argue over a movie just like they did. Reviews of books, movies and magazines are very important to the many authors and publishers who are trying to get their works accepted by the public. Reviews are very helpful in selling books, magazines and movies for they get the general hot rodding community interested in a project. If anyone else wants to write a review, please let me know. The SLSRH Newsletter is YOUR newsletter and you can contribute. We want you to contribute.

I totally agree with your editorial, about the "Playoff" formats of the racing sanctioning bodies. Playoffs, in racing, or golf are lame. The season is the season, and should be the standard for determining a champion; not who is hot at the end of the year. I do have issue with point systems that allow people to be leading, or in contention, without having won a race. Playoffs are for team sports, where you have team on team games. I never raced for points, just wins. You win enough rounds; the rest takes care of itself. Jeff Foulk Jeff: Racing has always had sponsors, fans and championships. At least as far back as 1900 when Vanderbilt put up the cup and purse and spectators lined the streets to see the flying Mercers and other early Marques careen from corner to corner. Henry Ford desperately wanted his cars to win these oval and road courses in order to build up the reputations of his cars. But it has only been recently that governing bodies have felt the need to play with the basic formula in order to hype up enthusiasm and bring in the crowds. In the past the #1 was painted on the cars with pride and they had to be earned with wins, or with enough podium finishes to justify the season's championship cup. Drag racing has always been like that. The very urge to drag race is to test the mettle of car and driver against another car and driver and time itself. The nature of drag racers is to compete heads up and the loser goes home, sometimes without the pink slip. It is as close to bull fighting as a motor sport can get. There's a winner and a loser; quick and permanent. No reruns and no instant video challenges as in football. To take away the points at the end and give racing teams a 2nd chance to pull an upset is not a worthy way to crown a champion, no matter how much the fans mewl and cry for such a system. In land speed racing there are no Mulligans. You have a few runs to test car and driver against time and the elements and you either take the record or you don't. It's simple, forceful and certain; there are no accountants tabulating beauty marks and technical grace. We don't need ice skating judges to tell us that we have won or lost. The clock tells us exactly what we need to know. Impartial, fair and accurate with no need to please the sponsors or fans. That's real racing. Tell us more about your racing experiences and what you have observed. The SLSRH encourages everyone to tell their stories.

Impound Insights; El Mirage, September 2010. By Dan Warner The September meet was a real good one – temps in the low 90s, minimal wind, and 5 runs if you wanted. The lack of wind can be a problem with hanging dust but, it looks like the 91 entries were able to cope. The El Mirage 200 MPH Club held their annual picnic in the SCTA building on Saturday night and all reports I heard indicate a big success. A good job was done by the organizing committee of Jim Snyder, Miler Mike Stewart and many others. The club was able to welcome two new members on Sunday, both on bikes. First was Ralph Hudson on his 1000-APSG entry at 203.774. The second new member is Greg Watters riding the Watters & Higgins & Noonan 750-APS-BG Suzuki with a 201.073 mph speed. Greg hails from Australia, so he came a long way to run with us on the dirt. Good job and welcome to the “Dirty Twos”. Other record setters include the Lattin & Gillette V4F/VCG, a new entry for the team with their Bantam coupe. William Lattin drove the little coupe to an 85 mph record over the 80 mph minimum. Dennis Mariani continues to push the F/StR, Mariani Farms entry, record up to higher levels with a record of 170. Willie Boelcke runs the Low Sodium C/GRMR, this meet he set the class record to 192. John Beck had a run in the Vintage Hot Rod C/BStR #511, John builds the horsepower and drives, this time to a 207 record. Rick Yacoucci used the unblown flathead at this meet while the other engine is prepped for World Finals. Rick’s Costella-Yacoucci-Pappas-Stevens XF/GS entry recorded a fine 183 record. The Eyres Moreland Holt entry in H/BFMR class was driven to a new record of 157. Tom Holt took the last record at SpeedWeek in this car and got the call at El Mirage. Miriam Macmillan, the lady of all jobs, was able to get another record in her H/BGCC Hondata entry at 186 mph. I guess Miriam was still on a red hat high from SpeedWeek as she moved into first place in points with this record. The final car record at the meet was done by the lovely Michele Brading. Michele drives the Costella-Dennee entry in K/FL, she took the class record at 158. Glen Dennee is Michele’s father and a long time racer in many different forms of motorsports. In addition to the previously mentioned new two club members Ralph Hudson and Greg Watters we saw seven more bike records on the other side of impound. Ralph Hudson rode his 750-APS-F class bike to a 191 record in addition to his 1000cc record. John Noonan once again took bike top speed and a record on his Noonan/Derwin/Moreland entry in 1650-APS-BG class at 248. David Isley rode the Isley Racing entry to a new record of 161 in the 1350-SC-PBG class. “Papi,” Steve Chappell, took his first record of the year with a fine run of 191 in the 160-P-P class. Jim Higgins was on hand to help team mate Greg Watters and decided to enter the 750-A-BG class with the Higgins/Watters bike. Jim was able to up the class record to 195 for a successful weekend. Scott Mattern (?) rode the Team McLeish TZ bike in the 175-A-BG class to a new record of 133. The final record of the meet was by Bill Anderson on/in his Screwball in SC-PF class. Bill rode/drove the sit in bike to a 120 speed. I could write that our next event is the World Finals but, that would be a fib. I am late with this El Mirage report and we have all returned from a very successful meet at the salt. So, our next event is the October 24th meet at El Mirage. Only two events left and points races are on our mind. Everyone be safe, go fast and have fun as someone we know tells.

I have sent you all of 2010 and I think two from 2009. I lost my history with a computer crash. I know you are aware of them! Dan Warner Dan: I have published some of your work before and other’s such as Jim Dunn’s reports. I appreciate these reports, for they give a history of each meet that will grow in value as the years go by. Thank you very much.

Congratulations, Bruce (Meyer)! I also got my first run at Bonneville. Paul Beck generously let me drive his '32 Roadster at Speed Week this year. A whole lot slower than you--only 140 mph. And WAY slower than the Speed Demon (and even slower than Bob Johnson). It's an original Henry Ford roadster with the exact same Chevy small block Paul ran the first time in his '32 Three Window many years ago--the "150 mph for $5,000" car. Engine never rebuilt. Could you pass this on to your readers? Dick Martin ---------------------- I feel so privileged to have had that opportunity, and that it made Tom Medley's day more special. I'm going to have the scanning for the print done later this week. They should be ready in a few weeks. Let me know if something like that comes up again, where one of my portraits might come in handy. Sincerely, Tom Fritz ---------------------- From: Tom Fritz [mailto:[email protected]] I've got the prints of Tom available. They're a canvas gicle on a heavy bamboo sheet, and the image is slightly smaller than the original. $150 plus $10 shipping. Let me know. Thanks, Tom Fritz. [email protected], www.fritzart.com, P. O. Box 800, Newbury Park, CA 91319-0800 Readers: Dick Martin promoted a special gathering to honor Tom Medley at the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum. Tom Fritz created a special painting of Tom Medley and now he has prints made of the original. Tom is a first class artist and has been creating paintings of cars, motorcycles and dry lakes artwork for years.

I am looking for any material, pictures, etc. on Leonard Abbott. His grandson is my son-in-law and I would like to surprise him with a scrapbook on his grandfather. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Winona Pinner Winona: You have reached the Society of Land Speed Racing Historians Newsletter. We are a group of independent historians and fans of straight-line racing and we try and help those who are doing research into the subject of Bonneville, the dry lakes land speed or drag racing. This is a group that saves and locates that particular history. To help us help you we need the following information or as much data as you can tell us. Once I have that information I will post it in the newsletter that reaches about a thousand people. I will also send your information to a few who I think might know the answers to your question. I found this statement on the internet; "He (Jack Jones) drove the Schultz & Jones AA/GD and in 1970, he retired and began to work with Leonard Abbott at Lenco in San Diego." Would this be the person you are trying to research? First of all give us a bit about his biography, where he lived, what he did; as much as you know about him. Was he involved in racing? Next, tell us about all the people that he knew and perhaps raced with. We may just know some of those people or something about those individuals that would trigger our memories. A very useful tool would be a biography and if you could start and send it to me, I would edit and help you finish it. I publish biographies and they are an excellent way of getting the public to respond. This email will go into our newsletter, but I will not print your contact information without your consent.

This email was sent to me by a good friend who was in a car club with me up at Whidbey Island, Washington, while we were in the Navy in the mid-50's. John went back to Denver, and became a drag racer. He was the NHRA Top Fuel Champ in 1981. Hope you enjoy this information. Yes, Leonard Abbott was involved in drag racing. First in the Memphis/West Memphis area. He moved to California and invented the Lenco transmissions which are still used in different types of race cars today. He is being inducted into the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame in March 2011. I will try to get more info. Thank you for your help! Winona Pinner Winona: I will send your letter to several people that I think can help you and post it in the Society of Land Speed Racing Historians Newsletter. Another plan of action that you can take is to develop a phone tree. Call all the people that you can think of and ask them what they know. Be sure to get their email addresses so that you can keep in contact with those that can help. Then ask each of these individuals if they know of anyone that you can call. Try and get them to give you at least five contacts. This has several advantages. One, people will hear through the grapevine that you are calling and looking for information and secondly, this approach will help you find people that aren't on the internet or are often unknown by the rest of us. Readers: Can any of you help Winona find out more information and history on Leonard Abbott and Lenco Transmissions. Any help, history or photographs that you can find will be most helpful.
