Steve’s Auto Restorations in Portland, OR has introduced designs that offer a new look at Ford’s ’33 & ’34 classic Model 40. In the ‘20s and ‘30s, coachbuilders offered exclusive body styling on car makers' chassis as selected by clients. Drawing inspiration from this “golden era” of fine coachbuilt motorcars, S.A.R.’s in-house designer David Brost has digitally rendered five new designs reminiscent of the great custom coachbuilt automobiles of the era.
The objective of the design exercise was to create five distinctive coachbuilt motorcars that share design ques, thus creating a “family resemblance” amongst the designs. David’s computer rendering stretches the original 112” wheelbase while moving the grille and body slightly rearward on the chassis. This allows for increased drivetrain possibilities. 18” and 20” wheels are custom units combining elements of OEM hubcaps and European wheel discs. Other shared design ques include angled grille shell, flush cowl and dash, chopped tops and custom fenders and running boards with custom reveals. Interior accoutrements carry on the shared “family” design. The five designs include a Coupe, Roadster, Cabriolet, Vicky and Sport Sedan.
