Goodguys 18th Southwest Nationals Recap

The 2015 Goodguys season came to a close with the 18th Southwest Nationals in Scottsdale, AZ.  The Scottsdale Westorld show grounds showcased over 3,000 glistening rods, customs, muscle cars, and classics.  The final two Goodguys Top 12 Cars of the year were crowned on Saturday when the weather was perfect.

The event took off on Thursday morning with the annual Hot Rod Cruise hosted by Over the Hill Gang - Phoenix.

The Top 12 Cars of the year took their place on the upper paddock, creating a star-studded exhibit.  Two of these 12 cars had to earn their way up there and were crowned just after lunch on Saturday.  The entrants came from all corners of the country.  When the votes were counted up, it was Harold & Tracy Chapman's ground hugging '68 Corvette from Andice, TX that was crowned Goodguys 2015 Grundy Worldwide Insurance Muscle Machine of the Year.  Just moments after winning the award, the Chapmans and driver Chris Jacobs qualified the car and then competed in the Duel in the Desert AutoCross Shootout and came in second.

Danny Popp of Cincinnati took the Goodguys/Accel AutoCrosser of the Year title with his blue '72 Corvette for the second time (he was also champion in 2013).  He ran a 65.603 to defeat Mike "Junior" Johnson in the final round.  Two weeks prior to winning in Scottsdale, Popp won the Optima Ultimate Street Car Invitational in Las Vegas to become that series' only 3-time winner.

The Goodguys season came to a perfect end in Scottsdale.  Goodguys will pick back up right back in Scottsdale March 4-6 for the Goodguys 7th Spring Nationals presented by Brown's Classic Autos.
