The Hemmings Motor News Great Race, presented by Hagerty, has its finish line in Santa Monica, CA and is set for June 28, 2015. The Automobile Driving Museum (ADM) will be specially open the following day, June 29, for competitors of the race to see the rare car collection.
The Great Race, formerly known as the Great American Race, is a classic rally for street-legal vintage automobiles at least 45 years old. The race is a precision pace race as opposed to a high-speed race, and points are awarded on the accuracy of a driver and navigator to match a time and average speed over a predetermined course. Points are also awarded on a handicap system that awards bonus points to older vehicles.
Prizes for the race are awarded in several categories, including the "X-Cup" for high school teams. Racers and spectators are invited and encouraged to bring their vintage racearsfor display and photos at the museum, and special docent tours of the museum will be available for guests from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The race will have its finish line in Santa Monica, which is near the ADM in El Segundo. The ADM is a unique venue for auto enthusiasts. Not only is the museum filled with over 130 vintage, antique, and muscle cars, it is also the only museum that takes you for a ride in them. The ADM is host to many events for families as well as auto enthusiasts. The museum was proud to be part of this historic car race adn was given the opportunity to present the "Hard luck Trophy", a trophy given to the competitor with the most hardship in the race.
