Tech Tips Many of B&M’s more popular shifters are ratchet shifters. This includes the Black Diamond, Hammer Shifter, MegaShifter, QuickSilver and Pro Ratchet. The shifter handle works on a ratchet action mechanism and in most instances the handle is moved forward for upshifts, backwards for downshifts, with the handle automatically returning to its original position after each shift. With these shifters the handle does not actually move through a quadrant but stays in the same position all the time. The only time the handle actually moves forward is when the shifter is shifted to ‘Reverse’ or ‘Park’, with the exception of the Pro Ratchet Shifter.
The main advantage a ratchet shifter has over a gate type shifter is you can only shift one gear at a time. No more missed shifts. Another advantage of a ratchet mechanism is it can work on a standard pattern valve body, or a reverse pattern valve body, by changing the indicator window or indicator decal. No mechanism modifications are necessary. Easy, precise shifts time after time. It’s hard to beat a ratchet action mechanism at the track or on the street!
