NSRA's 2006 Street Rodding Achievement Award Honors Corky Coker

The recipient of the annual National Street Rod Association's Street Rodding Achievement Award is selected by the NSRA to honor a business, company, individual or product in recognition of outstanding support of the street rod industry and is presented each year during the SEMA Show in Las Vegas in early November.

The individual selected for this honor in 2006 is familiar, at least by name, to almost everyone in the old car hobby, be it rodder or restorer. The company that bears his surname grew out of a business his father started in 1958, and although manufacturing was not in the original plan, it has become the lifeblood of the firm.

Corky Coker, right, accepts the 2006 NSRA Street Rodding Achievement Award from NSRA's Jerry Kennedy. The award was presented during the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, Nevada, in early November.

As is often the case, Corky Coker's passion for automobiles started in his youth when, as a teenager, he was employed in his father's retail tire outlet. Although he started studying veterinary medicine in college, Corky soon learned that was not his passion and switched his major to business... a step which has served him well in leadership roles in both his company and in trade associations. The direction of the family business began to change in 1974 when Corky took over the portion of the operation that represented only five-percent of the company's business. Today that portion of the company accounts for 95-percent of the business. Coker Tire is the world's largest distributor of antique and classic tires for automobiles, trucks and motorcycles, and the exclusive worldwide distributor of B.F.Goodrich Silvertown, Firestone and Firestone Wide Oval, and U.S. Royal vintage tires, along with offering their own brand of tires. The same drive that Corky Coker used to convert a small segment of the family business into a mainstay in the automotive aftermarket lead him to help form and be the chairman of the Automotive Restoration Market Organization (ARMO), and the immediate Past

Chairman of the SEMA Board of Directors. His dynamic personality and leadership qualities have been and will continue to be felt within and beyond our industry.

The National Street Rod Association is pleased to honor the man that has made a major commitment to insure that our vehicles of choice can ride on the tires that give them the right look and performance they deserve. Corky Coker was the recipient of the 10th annual NSRA Street Rodding Achievement Award, an honor he most obviously appreciated.
