Captain Jack III Completes Rebuild on Ultra-Rare Supercharger

The flathead Ford V-8 thundered out a great sound at Captain Jack's Speed Equipment headquarters this week. The event was the climax of a 4 month rebuild of one of the rarest superchargers in the world.
The stone age huffer was installed on Captain Jack III's personal 1934 Ford Coupe, " the Thunderbolt". A car with a rich history, the 5 window Coupe was once owned by local Tennessee stock car legend Bubba Green.

The supercharger, one of only three built by S&S in the late 1940s, was discovered in Colorado a year ago. " I quickly bought the beast, and was unsure what I would find inside", Captain Jack III said. New gears and shafts were manufactured and the cases were modified for better oiling. Captain Jack III said, " I had heard the supercharger was not a success and that a similar unit was built by Frenzel a short time later. Once I had it apart, it was easy to understand why it didn't work.

The impeller was too large in diameter for the speeds at which it was turning." After a backfire blew off one of the blade tips, Captain Jack cut down the rest to match. Internal diffuser vanes were added to direct airflow and the modified unit works very well.
The wild looking blower was installed, this week, on a highly modified 1936 21 stud V-8 built by Captain Jack III. The car will appear publicly, for the first time in nearly 60 years, at the 2008 NSRA Street Rod Nationals.
