Twelve-year-old Pedro Plancarte was ready to cruise through the Holley NHRA National Hot Rod Reunion pits in his new wheels thanks to the Darrell Gwynn Foundation. On Saturday, June 20th, in front of thousands of race fans, Reunion Grand Marshal and one of NHRA’s all-time top 50 drivers Darrell Gwynn personally presented a new foot-controlled wheelchair to Pedro who was accompanied by his own pit crew donning matching orange T-shirts with checkered flags that read, “Pedro’s Crew”. Mom and dad stood behind Pedro holding back tears while school mates, teachers and family members cheered for Pedro. With the help of a translator, Pedro’s parents expressed in Spanish that this gift is heaven sent and are so appreciative of Darrell’s kind gesture. “Donating a wheelchair before the fans gave the crowd a true sense of what our work is all about,” Gwynn said. Pedro was born with cerebral palsy. Where insurance companies denied Pedro a wheelchair, the Darrell Gwynn Foundation, as they do with many young deserving kids, stepped in to give Pedro easier mobility and a new start on a better childhood. Every year, the Reunion brings out new celebrations from weddings at the track to bringing joy to those less fortunate, the Reunion’s are much more than just a race.
