	Hetfield, Magnuson Take Home Early-Season Honors from Goodguys


	Pleasanton, CA - With spring in full swing, the Goodguys Rod & Custom Association has been busy staging events and handing out major awards. In the past two weeks, two of the 2010 “Terrific 12” awards have been presented at west coast events. Here’s a closer look!


	2010 Goodguys West Coast Custom of the Year Metallica front man James Hetfield has long been into custom cars and hot rods but the past few years has taken his passion to another level teaming with famed stylist Rick Dore.

At the Goodguys 28th All American Get-Together in Pleasanton, Hetfield’s “Slow Burn” took home the top prize. Designed by Hetfield and Rick Dore with paint and body artistry by Darryl Hollenbeck of Vintage Color Studio, “Slow Burn” edged out of top class field of customs including Scott Bonowski’s ’50 Merc from Signal Hill, Richard Zocchi’s ’68 Dodge Polara from Walnut Creek, Lionel Duran’s ’60 Buick from Salinas and Dore’s other entry – a candy blue 1950 Cadillac.

With a unique blend of concourse style elegance and traditional custom flare, Hetfield’s Auburn had the crowd cheering. This marked the first time the car had been shown outdoors. The candy Root beer House of Kolor looked amazing in the bright sun as did all the brass, nickel plated brightwork courtesy of Sherm’s plating. The one off Colorado Custom Wheels were designed by Hetfield himself. The tandem of Definitive Audio and Bob Divine handled the roadster’s leather upholstery to masterful specs. Keith Dean designed the Carson Top.


	2010 Street Rod d’Elegance The focus of the Del Mar Nationals, which celebrated its 10th anniversary last week, is and always has been elegantly styled street rods. Jerry Magnuson’s “Magnatude” ’32 Muroc roadster earned The Street Rod d’Elegance crown. The sleek, stylish and oh-so elegant ’32 roadster was hand formed by Marcel and designed by Chip Foose.

Features include an LS-1 Chevy with a intercooled Magnacharger (of course!), Tremec 6 speed transmission w/ polished Kugel 9”, Kugel I.F.S & I.R.S., custom Kugel chassis, chopped Carson top, DuVall windshield, hidden headlights, custom dash by Magnuson, Jim Griffin upholstery, tunneled seats and countless other subtle tricks. The paint is two-tone butterscotch pearl with champagne metallic. In traditional So-Cal hot rod fashion, the car features one off Foose designed “bigs and

littles” – 17x7” in front and 20x10” out back wrapped in Scorpion Zero rubber.

The field of street rods gathered here in Del Mar was the finest crop seen in years. It was a national lineup featuring a 5-pack of gorgeous, elegant ‘pre ’49 machines.

The top 5 finalists award included Brent Scheider, Pleasanton, CA (’37 Ford Cabriolet), Harold & Rhea Schrader, ’35 Ford (Franklin Lakes, NJ), Jerry Magnuson, Ventura, CA (’32 Ford roadster), Bill West, Terry, CA (’39 LaSalle) and Sean Wilson, Alpine, CA (’37 Ford).

Both Hetfield and Magsuson not only received a gorgeous billet aluminum award, but will also receive a custom toolbox from Snap-On Tools wrapped in vinyl featuring a portrait of their cars. The vehicles will join the star studded “Terrific 12” year-end display of all 2010 Goodguys major award winners at the 13th Southwest Nationals, November 19, 20 & 21 at Westworld in Scottsdale, Arizona.
