Pete Chapouris, hot rodding legend and president of So-Cal Speed Shop, died Jan. 6, 2017 at the age of 76. He died peacefully in the hospital surrounded by his family. His death was due to unexpected complications resulting from a stroke.
A life-long lover of cars, Chapouris drove his first cruiser (a Model A coupe) on the streets of Los Angeles in 1955. He began customizing cars as a business in the late '50s and by the '60s had established himself as a major talent. In November of 1973, his flame-emblazoned black ’34 Ford coupe was featured on the cover of Rod & Custom magazine. The picture actually served as a motivating force in bringing classic Fords back into the spotlight of car customization and restoration culture.

Chapouris and his friend Jake Jacobs opened a shop, Pete & Jake’s Hot Rod Parts, in Temple City, Calif. The shop quickly became known for producing reliable parts for rodders the world over. From that point Chapouris' involvement in car culture only expanded - he built a car (a ’34 coupe) for Hollywood film The California Kid, served as SEMA's president, helped found SREA... His influence was truly colossal.
Perhaps even more than his work as an expert builder and advocate for hot rodding culture, Chapouris' contributions to the continuation of car customization ensure his remembrance. At So-Cal Speed Shop, he mentored young enthusiasts, passing along his incredible knowledge, skill and passion to the next generation. His legacy will live on through his friends, cars and students for many years to come.
