The Autry Museum is tucked into Griffith Park in the heart of Los Angeles, CA. It's a museum devoted to the heritage of the American West, and very little ties so deeply into our modern concept of the west as a place of vast open landscapes and vistas as the romance of Route 66. From June 8, 2014 - January 4, 2015, the Autry is hosting, "Route 66: The Road and the Romance" an exhibit and support programming that celebrates that very topic.
The 2400 mile highway was built in 1926, and goes from Chicago to Los Angeles. It represents an enourmous, idealized vision of the concepts of the road, the road trip and American development. The exhibit chronicles the iconography, the influence on pop culture, and the history of the highway itself. In addition, the museum is hosting occasional weekend cruise-ins sponsored by local car clubs. This Saturday, September 13, the the Alfa Romeo Club of Southern California is hosting, and october's event will be sponsored by the San Fernando Valley Region Vintage Chevy Club of America.
Other events includea LEGO Day at the Autry, a celebration of the Beat Poetry experience, a documentary screeing, and a seminar on the end of the highway as a major thoroughfare.
