The wait continues for the eager Speed Week fans looking for broken records, as Christmas skipped another year. Organizers of Speed Week at the Bonneville Salt Flats announced the event was canceled, due to a lack of salt. Officials from the Southern California timing association ruled that there were only 2 1/4 miles of suitable salt for a safe road course.
“The rest of the salt flats are either wet or wet and muddy,” the release states. “If the wet salt gets dry, future events could be possible,” said Speed Week officials. The Bonneville Salt Flats require a certain amount of dry salt in order to run. The Salt Flats Racing Association uses four courses, but only the Course #1 “Short Course” (3-5 miles long) and Course #2 “Long Course” (5-7 miles long) are used during Speed Week. However, there are no plans to cancel The World Finals that runs from Sep 29th-October 2nd according to HotRod.
