Famous Race Car Drivers Al Unser Jr. and Robby Unser Join Team
America’s Oldest Speed Shop is returning to its competitive roots by sponsoring the 2015 Team Speedway racing team.
Team Speedway hits the road this weekend, with drivers Robby and Al Unser Jr. competing at the Goodguys Spring Nationals March 13-15 in Scottsdale, AZ. It’s the first of many Goodguys AutoCross events the Unsers will compete in this race season. They’ll be driving Team Speedway’s G-Comp ’65 Nova, a former economy car that has been transformed into a first-rate handling machine thanks to the new bolt-in G-Comp Chevy II front suspension from Speedway Motors. Though it just hit the autocross track late in the 2014 season, the Nova is already running neck-and-neck with the top cars in the country.
“While launching the G-Comp suspension line in 2014, we realized that getting back to our racing roots was the best way to prove the performance potential of these components,” said Speedway’s lead engineer, Carson Smith, oldest son of company founder “Speedy” Bill Smith. “As Team Speedway was being built, we found ourselves reaching out to the Unser family again. What a great opportunity to work with such seasoned racers and friends from our company’s earlier racing days. Supporting their team and this crew has generated an infectious amount of enthusiasm in our employees and our customers. We’re excited to see what 2015 brings!”
Both Unsers hail from one of America’s most storied racing families. Al Unser Jr. followed his family into Indy racing and won the Indianapolis 500 in 1992 and in 1994, in addition to being a two-time overall points champion. Al Jr. has been hailed as one of the most dynamic and successful drivers in American auto racing. Robby Unser – who is the cousin to Al Jr. – began racing go-karts at age 8, and by his teens was racing stock cars, sprint cars, and Formula Fords. In 1989, Robby won the American IndyCar Series title driving a car campaigned by Speedway Motors’ Carson and Jason Smith. Robby has won the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb an unprecedented nine times in a wide range of classes.
Having both Robby and Al Jr. on the same track invokes the excitement their famous fathers brought to Indy decades ago with many Unser vs. Unser competitions. This is a family rivalry you won’t want to miss when it comes to a track near you!
