Industry, CA., Jul. 25 – Tyson Burmeister, a 28-year old 500cc Division 1 speedway cycle veteran started from lane two and won his second main event this season Wednesday night at Industry Speedway. More than 1,000 fans watched his impressive ride in the Industry Hills Expo Center Grand Arena. The race ended one lap early after a crash by fourth place Gino Manzares caused a red flag. He rose quickly and walked to the pits holding his right arm, which contacted the wall as he exited the second turn, leading to his fall. Officials called the event complete per the rulebook because more than 50% of the race had been completed.
Burmeister, from Murrieta, became the third different race leader on the first lap and remained in front all the way in a youth oriented feature lineup. He won the first feature of the Industry 13 Wednesday nights series on May 30 in an exciting duel with two-time World Speedway Champion Billy Hamill. Burmeister was the only rider in a 16 D-1 field of experts able to score a perfect nine points this week by winning all three of his heat races. Hamill and Charlie Venegas, nine point scorers from last Wednesday, were absent this week. Hamill and his family were vacationing at Lake Havasu, AZ and Venegas was helping a friend complete a job.
Under age 21 US 2011 National Champion Austin “On the Throttle” Novratil, 17, placed second. Eddie Castro, 52, was third to uphold the reputation of age 50+ riders. Manzares, 18, was fourth and the only non-finisher. The hectic first lap had three leaders. Manzares shot into the lead from lane one as the four riders raced into the first turn. Lane four starter Novratil powered into the lead on the outside leaving the second turn, but lane two starter Burmeister shot past Novratil on the inside entering turn three and was in command for good by turn four. He scored a convincing victory as the battle became a duel for second between Novratil and Castro. Manzares faded to fourth on the opening lap.
Eloy Medellin, of Garden Grove, celebrated his 43rd birthday two days early by winning the 500cc Division 2 feature. Jamison Dilkey, a 16-year old Colfax High School junior from Auburn, made his first Industry Speedway appearance and placed a close second in the D-2 main. He is the 2011 Youth Division A Auburn track champion and the winner of D-3 (May) and D-2 (June) mains this season at his home track—Fast Fridays in Auburn. Shawn Eldredge, a D-1 rider and Fast Fridays referee, also raced at Industry for the first time and scored one point. Lewis Hughes, a 42-year old Duarte resident, won his first 500cc D-3 feature in only his second night of racing at Industry. It was only his sixth race (including four at San Bernardino) since he completed a training course taught by Billy Hamill.
With seven sidecar teams present, Chris Jones subbed as driver of the No. 1 sidecar for his injured brother Joe. Jones won the four lap 1,000cc main with his sidecar rider Johnny Glover. They led all four laps. Other main event victories went to Dillon Ruml, 13, of Huntington Beach, in a five lap, five rider 250cc youth main. It was his second consecutive victory. Braydan Galvin, 13, took the youth 200cc main in another five lap, five rider event. Fan favorite “Lightning” Luke Whitcomb, 6, of Anaheim, won his sixth consecutive pee-wee main on his No. 27 50cc mini cycle. He again started the four rider field with a 40-yard handicap because of his growing proficiency. He won his the first heat and then fell hard in his second heat race. He rose slowly, restarted that race and finished second to newcomer Jonas LeoGrande, 6, of Grand Terrace. Jonas fell on lap 2 of the main while leading fast-closing Whitcomb and placed fourth.
