CLARK ON PATH FOR USAC WESTERN PAVEMENT CROWN
WESTLAKE VILLAGE, CALIFORNIA (October 4, 2011) – As the 2011 USAC Ford Focus season winds down, 17 year-old Jessica Clark is moving closer to becoming the first female to win the USAC Western Pavement Ford Focus championship. The Ron Sutton’s Winner’s Circle driver used fourth and eighth place finishes this Saturday at the Las Vegas Bullring to hold a nearly 100 point lead.
Clark has raced both USAC Ford Focus and NASCAR S2 Sportsman in 2011 but the USAC championship has taken center stage of the last few months as it became clear she had a shot at the championship. Clark has finished in the top-three eight times this season.
A tough field of 17 cars were in attendance for Saturday night’s races with the USAC Utah championship to be decided on the evening. Clark came home second in qualifying behind RSWC teammate Keegan Walmer with a 15.254 second lap on the three-eights mile oval.
Both 30 lap features on the night were run with minimal caution periods. Clark ran third throughout the early going of the first race before loosing the position to Walmer. She managed to fend off teammates Tanner Long and Paul Graham to hold down fourth at the finish.
The second 30 lapper was a little more trying as a high invert and a caution-free affair made advancing through the pack difficult. Clark tried to follow teammate Walmer through the pack. From the back, Clark was up to ninth by lap 9 and to eighth on lap 20.
The field began to spread out under green and Clark settled for the eighth place finish.
“This was a good night for Jessica as her closest competitor for the championship failed to finish the second main event,” Driver Coach Ron Sutton said. “With just a few races to go Jessica just needs to finish races and she should win the championship!”
Jessica Clark’s next race in the USAC Ford Focus will be this Saturday night at Shasta Raceway Park in Anderson, Calif.
