There are two major shows in this area every year. I�m going to talk about the one that is held in Arkansas City, Kansas. This show started way back in 1975. We have friends who moved down there the year before this show started and after a few years of begging us to come down, we finally went, that was nearly 20 years ago, and we haven�t missed a show since. This is a show where the spectators have almost as much fun as the participants because of the Saturday night Cruise. The sponsoring club is the Ark City Tumbleweeds, and this great group has made this one of the best shows of the year in this area. It has always been traditionally held the last full weekend of September. We have watched this show swell to over a 1,000 entries. A few years ago, the Ark City Police Department had a �closed cruise�, if you didn�t have an entry slip on your windshield, you couldn�t cruise. Once they did that, the numbers just kept getting bigger and bigger. In �95 the club built and customized a �59 Chevy Sedan Delivery and gave it away in a drawing for the participants. In 2000, they did the same thing to a �40 Ford and I understand that this will happen again in 2005, their 30th show. While the Cruise was going on downtown, there were also contests going on at the north end of the cruise, in the Ace Hardware parking lot, there is a burn out contest, and a flame throwing contest, the whole cruise line is filled with spectators, considering that the cruise is over two miles one way, that�s a whole lot of people!!! And the cruise is simply a lot of fun for all. It�s like I remember when I used to cruise the main street of Wichita as a teenager, it�s a time warp like no other. The show attracts customs, purists, racers, hotrods, rat rods, and just about everything in between. Trucks, low-riders, you name it, they come. This is a 2-day show and back before the Drag strip went out of business, there were Nostalgia Drags there on Sunday. Awards begin at noon and everyone is usually on their way home by 2pm.
