Hi All
On most any summer Saturday around here there are two or three car shows within an hour�s drive of Jonesboro. But if you wanted to show this weekend there was only one option, the Kustoms and Klassics open Show in Searcy. A little farther than usual but a great show that benefits children�s charities.
A quick Friday poll of North East Arkansas Street Rod Association (NEASRA) members indicate we would have a good turn out. The gig was on.
This morning I was on the road at 7 am and I stopped in Bald Knob a little after 8 for breakfast. Not certain of my directions I asked the couple at the next table if they knew where the show was being held. Turns out they did and they said they would be over later to check the cars out. It�s not far from Bald Knob to Searcy and in a few minutes I was pulling into the park. Just ahead of me I spotted some fellow NEASRA members, Anna and Roger Cope with their outstanding Essex Sedan, Melody and Kenny Freeman in their Porsche Guards Red �32 Roadster and Dot and Ron Johnson in their silver and blue �34 Ford Vicky Cabriolet. Where are the rest of the guys and gals I asked. We are it was the reply.
With over 180 entries the show never missed our party poopers. Those of us who did show up set to polishing and dusting and rubbing. And then we all moved with our coolers and chairs into the shade of some nearby pine trees. It was hot. But all of us did find the spunk to get out and walk around a bit. Lots of really great cars. And I took a bunch of pictures. I ran into the gent from breakfast who told me he had voted for �Hot Stuff� in the People�s Choice competition. I didn�t win but I certainly appreciated the pat on the back. One car that caught my attention was a home fabricated �Modified� style �26-�27 T Roadster. One of those under construction projects that are simply loaded with old time style. Every part of this car had been fabricated at home. The body featured some rather extensive tube structures like the one under the dash. All bent at home using heat, muscle and patience. Some folks would call it a �rat rod� but this thing has too much style and the level of craftsmanship is to high for that moniker. I took a lot of pictures of it to share with you. Even if Modifies aren�t your cup of tea, I hope you can see the attributes that make this car outstanding in my book.
The show was judged using a 100 point scale. No classes but there were two divisions. One for the older rods, trucks, and muscle cars, and another for late model vehicles, the kind that kids getting into the car hobby are most likely to own. And I have to tell you, some of the ricers and mini trucks I saw were just as innovative and just as well built as anything us old timers are pushing through the garage doors. The hobby is in safe hands.
How did we do? Well, Melody and Kenny came home with the Mayor�s Award and Ron and Dot received one of the 20 First Place trophies. My �Hot Stuff� received third place recognition. Considering the high quality of all the entries I was very pleased. Take a look at the pictures. I think you�ll agree, there were a lot of really fine rides in Searcy that day! Enjoy.... Steve!!!
