One of Guthries machines. Those 1 stickers stand for something. Well get back when we find out what.

There were three neatly turned-out deuce highboy street roadsters on hand, all prepping for Bonneville. This C/SR featured a removable step to ease entry, and a distinctive air grabber.

Biglow Racing, from New Jersey, was sorting out its A/Blown Street Roadster (indicating a dual-quad, supercharged Chevy big block in this case). A real street machine, it features some heavy duty steering and suspension pieces of sprint-car origin. Front tire tread would make the CSI labs job easy.

The limit for E/SR is 260 cubic inches, and this cars GM V6 slots in nicely at 258. Hailing from the Philadelphia area, this is a new car. The body is a steel Brookville unit, lovingly finished and complete with all equipment needed to be street-legal. Bart wheels hold wide rear tires used at Maxton; others, with narrow Bonneville tires, will be used on the salt flats.

Worried that old NASCAR racing tires may end up as mosquito hatcheries? Bill Crawford, who runs the Maxton refreshment stand, offers reassurance thats not the case. The souvenir sidewalls tell the tale of where these tars came from and on what run (RF8 = right front, 8th change, crayon gives the car number). $20 eachmakes a fine dart-board surround. The floor mats use the material from the tires tread area. $30 each.

It looks like a streamliner, but its a modified sports car. The original body was initially a tiny British Berkeley.

What happens after you go 175 in a Volvo Bertone coupe and win the ECTA championship? You put the 355-inch Chevy in a Mazda RX-7 and go for 200. The team uses a 930-cfm Predator carb, abetted by application of nitrous.
