Bowling Green: June 17-19, 2005- The third-edition of NHRA's Hot Rod Reunion in Bowling Green, KY, was its best so far. Centered around Beech Bend Raceway Park on the northeast corner of town, it featured lots of drag-racing  action, including loud, smokiferous burnouts by top fuel slingshots and and pre-1972 modified cars

The crowd was heavily from the Midwest and Midsouth, and traditional rods vastly outnumbered 'glass phantom coupes and zippy aero roadsters in the parking lots. Rat rods, rusty and low, were in evidence, particularly in the form of chopped and channeled pickups. But, there was the a definite Post Rat Rod
look, the primered cars, a step or two more finished than the rusty rats. Wire wheels and screw-on moon disks (the latter a nod to the increasing interest in Bonneville) were noticeably present.

Cars up thru 1971 were eligible to participate, but early rods predominated. San Diegan Jerry Baltes (in chair) brought his newly restored Croshier-Baltes-Lavato top fueler for the Cacklefest, and put on a one-car version after the awards presentations that cleared the area of diletantes. Baltes was known for his smokey wheelstanding starts.
