On August 18&19, 2006 Downeast Street Rods, Maine’s oldest and largest Hot Rod Club held its 34th Annual Rod Run at Hebron Pines Campground in Hebron, Maine. For the first time in our history, the event was open to vehicles 1972 and earlier. We had special parking areas for vehicles 72 and earlier, an area for streetrods and customs, an area for vintage race cars, and in the “Rattle Can Corral”, we had Rat Rods and Jalopies. It was a great weekend with many activities to enjoy. Some of the activities included, drag racing at a local dragstrip, an ice cream/poker run, NSRA inspections, car games, swap meet and vendors, a metal working demonstration, 50/50, pin striping, many door prizes, a DJ playing 50’s music, a live Rock-a-Billy band, and a pot luck dinner with pig roast. We even had a Rock-a-Billy model, the lovely “Amy Rose”. Camping was available all weekend for those interested. We were honored to have some special guests on hand. Al Thistle, drag racing legend from Sanford, Maine Dragway during the 50’s and early 60’s autographed commemorative Sanford Dragway Posters we created in his honor. The Alter Boys , a car club made up of young “Hot Rodders” from Mass. drove up for the weekend in their way cool vintage hot rods. They were a great addition to our “Rattle Can Corral.” A wonderful time was had by all. We will do it again for the 35th time next year August 17&18, 2007. Leigh Roak, President, Downeast Street Rods
