East Coast Timing Assoc. Speed Trials Maxton, NC “Monster Mile” Bonneville Tune-up Meet June 24-25, 2006 Pictures and story from AB Shuman 3 Pages
Down East Labonte-McKinney team hauls down straight from Maine to race their strong fuel-fed D/Modified Sports Vette (Maxton is close to the South Carolina border).
Serious rides, Suzuki Hyabusas. Ultimate speed record at Maxton is held by Lee Shierts on Rich Yancy’s still street-drivable ‘busa, at a mere 260 mph
From Tampa, this fast D/Street Roadster was built in Santa Barbara, Calif., by a group of veteran hot rodders, including (for you oldtimers) Bob Joehnk. The Model A-bodied car runs 189+ at Maxton, and sports many aerodynamic trick details, like low-drag front axle and hidden front torsion bar suspension.
Speaking aero tricks, riders leathers have built-in head fairing. Boots seem to be from a Dungeons and Dragons shoppe.
New Charger SRT8 was limited to 125 mph by officials in the process of safely certifying driver in steps for increasing speeds. Brief rain delayed the run. Then, off it went. Way too fast, as our spy in the timing stand noted. So, that it was it for the weekend
More of the yellow A roadster. It may have headlights and rear fenders, but it’s a serious purpose-built race car. With steering wheel removed blue nozzles for Halon fire suppression system are evident.
