55th Detroit Autorama Pinstriper Jamboree Charity Auction
Detroit, MI
March 9-11, 2007
Photographer: John Sanderson

This was the 4th year for the Pinstripers Jamboree. Every year it has become larger, and more successful, as a way to raise money for the Rainbow Wish Connection Charity. The Mission of the Rainbow Connection is to make the special wishes of children with life-threatening or terminal illnesses come true. All wish requests are considered without regard to gender, race, or religious preference. Check out their website: www.rainbowwishconnection.org

Long time striper, “Yosemite” Sam Radoff, started, organizes, and runs this event, as a way to raise some money for the kids that are helped by this program. Ralph Hancock and numerous others donate a lot time and effort to help this event go on. All of the stripers donate pinstriped items that are auctioned off at several times, during each day of the show, with 100% of the proceeds going to charity. This year had 200 stripers participating, and raised a whopping $52,293 for charity after last year’s record setting $41,000!

The pinstriped items included custom painted panels, car parts, bowling pins, motorcycle gas tanks, clothing, and anything that will take some paint! Two of the best known stripers were Von Dutch and Ed Roth, both now deceased, but there were numerous example of their styles of art, done as a tribute to them. This event draws the nation’s most talented stripers from brand new ones to local legends. It has become a virtual Who’s Who of Pinstriping. Every artist that participates, goes into the Hall of Fame. For more information about this, go to: www.PinstripersJamboree.com

Yosemite Sam has been a fixture on the custom car and bike painting scene for over 45 years, and has been a working artist in painting and sculpture, too. His paint work has won countless awards and even featured his classic style of flames on Prowlers and PT Cruisers used in TV and print ads for Chrysler. Much more of his work can be seen at: www.yosemitesams.com

A great highlight of this part of the show, is the opportunity to talk to each of the artists, as they work, and know that this community is supporting a great thing. The coverage starts off with a great poster for the event, shows a few of the stripers, and just a fraction of the things that went up for auction. You don’t want to miss this part of the Detroit Autorama!
