The 9th Annul Cruisin’ For A Cure, the world's largest one day charity custom/classic auto show and cruise was one of the largest in its history. Held at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa, California, nearly 3700 vehicles, 200 vendors and 20,000 spectators attended. Of course a highlight of the day was the 1 1/2-mile cruise that snaked its way through the Fairgrounds, giving drivers a chance to show their ride to the appreciative spectators that lined the route.
Cruisin’ For A Cure is the brainchild of Debbie Baker, who started the event to help raise awareness of prostate cancer. She is a self-described car fanatic and the founder and chair of Cruisin’ For A Cure that has become the country’s leading prostate cancer fundraiser—this year raising more than $200,000.00 for prostate cancer research.
In addition to the vehicles, vendors and the rolling car show, live entertainment by musical groups including “The Answer” was presented throughout the day. Hundreds of awesome prizes were also raffled off, including a ZZ4 engine from Connell Chevrolet, a Hemi engine from Orange Coast Dodge-Chrysler-Jeep, a set of Budnik Wheels, and the grand prize, a sweet Downs full-fendered ’33 Ford Roadster (won by John Dangelo).
As we said, the main purpose of the event is to help prevent prostate cancer, so the Drive Against Prostate Cancer van, the only national mobile screening program for prostate cancer, was on hand, administering more than 1,000 free prostate screenings (including yours truly) at the event. Of these, 52 were discovered to have a high count and instructed to see their doctor for further testing. As a testament to its success, some 400 lives have been saved by the tests given at The Cruise in its nine-year history.
Cruisin' For A Cure is a registered non-profit California organization. All of the 150 individuals that organize the show, handle show day logistics, and generally help make this event a success, do this voluntarily in addition to their “day jobs.” Unlike many other automotive fundraising events, none of the money goes to a car club, promoter, or administrative overhead.
