The 20th Annual California Hot Rod Reunion is in the books, and what a story to tell...attendance was the largest in recent history, so many in fact that the fire marshall was reportedly keeping tabs on the gates...more than 40 funny cars on the grounds, with the 16 qualifiers all being well into the five's to make the field...the grove filled early as did the pit areas set aside for those attending in hot rods...the swap meet was packed as well.
While I drove the roadster over, I spent the time in the pit, as Smokey Alleman, Rick Rogers and my son Mike, along with the rest of the crew, were there to make the first pass on the car, 'Smokey's Firebird', eventually made two passes, with the final one breaking into the 5's, a 5.98 @ 235.64, on only the second pass on the car! To end the weekend, Mike went to Army Armstrong's booth, 'The Funny Factory', and bought the new 78/79 Challenger body that had just been released, this being one of, if not the first one on the West Coast...look for it at the March Meet!
