The Chevelle is one of the most iconic muscle cars of all time. The SS396 was already legendary by 1970. The Mark IV Big Block has been installed in A-bodies since the 1965 Chevelle Z16. With 72,730 miles this numbers-matching SS is offering you temptation that's tough to resist. The Chevrolet ads introducing its all-new-for 1970 version of the SS396 put it this way, “In Ten Seconds Your Resistance Will Self-Destruct”. Air-gulping, cowl induction awaits you.
This SS396 is one of the most well respected muscle cars of the era. This one's interior is original and the rest of the car received a ground up restoration with body and paint by a local pro shop. The engine build was done by a well-known specialist in race car engines. The project was completed in 2015 with only around 800 miles since. Our owner purchased it 2 years ago from a friend who had it for 22 years. GM of Canada documents are included, as well as the original manual and clean and clear title in Owner’s name.
Original paint code, Metallic Mist Green with Black rally stripes shows very high quality paintwork with professional fit and finish. The pictures don't do justice to the depth of the paintwork! The muscular curves are matched by honest performance. There’s no pretense here. What you see is exactly what you get. The cowl induction power bulge hood scoop is beautiful and functional with the vacuum actuated rear flapper that sucks in cool air. Hood pins keep you buttoned down. Rally wheels wrapped in BFG Radial T/A’s complete the package.
Dark Green was a very popular color choice for the day and looks great with the lighter green exterior. We have vinyl bucket seats, console, horseshoe shifter, automatic transmission, power steering, power front disc brakes, Chevy AM/FM cassette deck, rear defogger with vents in package shelf, remote rear view mirror, tinted glass and SS badging that send you back in time in this ‘70’s dream machine. The interior is all original and in fantastic condition after 52 years!
Pro built Turbojet L34 396/350 hp is mated to a Turbo Hydra-Matic 3-speed automatic transmission. 800 miles since build was done according to original specs with the addition of fuel injection and a high lift cam. Original carb is included. 12 bolt positraction hooks you up. Cowl induction set up is original. Stainless steel dual exhaust with Turbo mufflers sound like ‘70’s thunder. There are sway bars front and back along with power front disc brakes. Driven 300 miles in the last 2 years.
Not much to discuss here in this turn-key vehicle. The tires have deep tread and the rims are free of road rash. The engine compartment is clean and uncluttered. The underside is just as nice with barely any signs of even surface rust. The original interior shows only light wear - the bead on the drivers seat is slightly worn and lost surface color. Paint and body are in like-new condition. No signs of fluid leaks and no corrosion. This is a high end, show quality driver.
Values continue to rise for the ‘70 Chevelle SS and they are getting hard to purchase in this condition without getting a second mortgage. This is a beautiful example of power and design. A favorite of the Golden Era of Muscle. It was the peak of performance for Chevrolet in its day pushing the boundaries of the Corvette for the first time in history. Car collectors have taken notice making it one of the most collectable muscle cars of all time.
