It has a very high ground clearance of 16″ under the axles, and its width helps compensate for its high center of gravity. The entire driveline is mounted very high in the body of the truck; in fact, the truck is somewhat cramped inside despite its width, because part of the engine lives between the front seats! It has 4 wheel independent suspension and full time 4 wheel drive. Ground clearance is improved by geared hubs in each wheel, which allows the axles to enter the hubs above the centerlines of the wheels. The differentials are mounted even higher, creating the appearance of a cavernous tunnel underneath the truck. The 4 wheel disc brakes are mounted inboard at the differentials. Exterior No desert tan or drab olive here, this Hummer is dressed in a single stage of flat Tuff Coat Gray paint which highlights the details of the stamped steel panels and serves as a nice base for all of the black elements of the rig. Latches, gas tank caps, brush guard, hood vents, hinges, and the roof panel and bed cover, all black, and there's no way to miss the massive wheel and tire combo. 16.5 inch 8-lug beadlock black beauties wrapped in 37x12.50 run flat Goodyear M/T tires with one mounted high in the back as a spare. A bit of whimsy is present with the Convoy inspired angry rubber duck hood ornament leading the charge above the LED headlights. No imperfections were noted on the rugged exterior. Interior Flat black paint coats the inner doors which are uncovered plates of steel with window tracks exposed and tall bucket seats await inside in black leather, heated up front, with a large expanse between to two pairs of seats and unlike the Army versions, that expanse is covered with carpet for a clean finish on this example and there is some soundproofing underneath it. The steering wheel remains simple and the dash is clean and utilitarian compared to your Range Rover, and a center console has been made multi purpose with cupholders, phone holders, and fans. There's a compartmentalized storage tray on the transmission tunnel along with the range selector close to the driver. Overhead, we have Bluetooth speakers and a backup camera monitor. There's a 12,000 BTU RV air conditioner to cool this cavernous interior. Drivetrain According to our consignor, the Army installed a 1997 6.5 liter diesel eight cylinder and at least part of the engine is visible under the massive hood. It's fuel injected and capable of 190 horsepower while the 4L80E 4-speed automatic behind it has a Black Dog Customs stand alone computer and a Derale powered fluid cooler. Undercarriage Massive components and steel plates reside underneath with some typical surface rust present, but generally clean from our perspective. Suspension consists of coil springs front and rear and four wheel power disc brakes are also onboard. There is a single exhaust that runs through a stock style muffler before finding its terminus. Drive-Ability It's not unlike driving a boat, with a ton of real estate around you and a regular sized control panel from which to control it. It hums along in fine fashion, producing adequate amounts of power, straight and wide tracking, and surefooted handling. It takes a minute or two to get used to the width, but once adjusted, it's a civilian's dream. All functions on board this battleship operate as intended and we head back to the base which we call the mall. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase. This one has some creature comforts that will keep you cool and comfortable during the zombie apocalypse or black Friday sale at Raymour and Flanigan. https://www.classicautomall.com/vehicles/8147/1989-am-general-humvee-m998-pickup AM General https://www.hotrodhotline.com/forsale/vehicles/am_general/hummer/1995/listing/222697 1995 AM General Hummer H1 For consignment, a 1995 AM General Hummer with a title verified 96,581 actual miles.  This is one of 1,432 Hummer's produced for the general public in 1995 which were assembled on the same line as the military vehicles and shared some components like brakes, axle, and body panels, but were moved to a separate building for paint.   This is a go anywhere 4 door with a lot of interior room, a width of 86.5 inches, and the capability of going into three feet of water unscathed.   Exterior The Hummer's stamped aircraft aluminum body is painted White, the first and most obvious indication that this is not the military version.  But that doesn't hinder its sheer presence which, in a few words, is monstrous, boxy, and tough.  A high bumperless front provides for aggressive approach angles, like when you're forced to climb over a Tesla with a dead battery blocking the road.  The black grille, brush guard, and D-shackles are all business and the exposed door hinges are epic.  Good sized windows allow light to enter the inner cavern and the back has side windows flanking the windowed barn doors.  The rear bumper is also painted black and carries more heavy duty shackles and a tow hitch.  Because of the width, requisite clearance lights appear over the windshield and under the rear doors and a storage rack on the roof covers corner to corner.  The black paint is essentially flawless.  17-inch Motiv wheels carry 37x12.50R17LT tires with a mid 2023 date code, so scratch that high dollar update off your list!   Imperfections include some cracking paint, a sizable chip, and some paint run.  Interior In contrast to the utilitarian exterior, nice, molded plastic doors in tan are accented with woodgrain plastic trim for a very civilized environment.  The storage pouch on each door is pleated tan vinyl in a nod to basic military practicality.  The bucket seats in front are tall and tan cloth and your shotgun rider is practically in the next county, separated by the expansive console, more on the center console in a second.  The rear seats are also two widely split buckets but in the raised tunnel between them sits a small bench.  It's like bleacher seating where the two center passengers, the smaller, the better, will be one level above the two outside seats.  The padded steering wheel gives way to a simple albeit busy dashboard.  The round speedometer is dead center while toggle switches, indicator lights and other gauges are to the sides feeling very much like an airplane and all dressed in shiny wood veneer.  The huge plastic center console is canted towards the seats and for the driver, affords access to the AM/FM/CD radio and climate controls.  All passengers, front and rear essentially get stretches of flat tan plastic in front of them.  The "wayback" is basically flat and carpeted with shelves and lots of room for "stuff" or to camp out in.  Drivetrain A 5.7 liter V8 rated at 195 horsepower resides under the forward flipping hood and presents in dusty, driver condition.  Power is routed through a 4L80E 4-speed automatic transmission.  4.92 gears produce the ratio for both front and rear axles.  Power disc brakes are onboard, (and inboard!), to bring this 6,000 pound hauler to a halt.   Undercarriage After viewing the underside of so many "regular" cars, it looks like the land of the giants under here; everything is magnified from the steel frame to the springs to the stabilizer bars.  We note some invasive rust holes in the frame, surface rust on other parts, and pitted rust in others. Tow shackles and hooks are numerous and an airlift back bumper spans beyond the seven foot width of this M998, just in case you get stuck in the parking lot at Cabela's and need a lift out. Large towing mirrors stick out well beyond the 7 feet and flank a perfectly vertical windshield. As a heavy truck, the body has remained straight, and the only imperfection is the mismatched paint on every side. There are three holes on the back where the whip antenna mount would have been. Interior Okay, so remember, this is not a civilian Hummer, so it's going to be bare bones and rougher than a stucco bathtub. The canvas doors are clean and lead to simple cloth covered seats in mixed material, loose, dirty and ready for some offroading. Everything else is sparse and bare metal, if you don't include the drab green paint. A large steering wheel fronts a basic dashboard with black faced gauges, metal plates, switches, lights, and an added boost gauge needs to be weathered a bit to fit in. The engine cover and center hump takes up enough real estate to put your navigator in the next county and the cabin is comparatively narrow between the windshield and the canvas rear wall. Drivetrain The reverse opening hood reveals a battle ready 6.5 liter turbo diesel engine that is fuel injected and tied to a TH400 3-speed automatic transmission. Power is split between the axles where 2.73 gears reside and power disc brakes are used to slow this rig which in this configuration is somewhere around 5,000 pounds. Undercarriage Oh sure, there's surface rust and a bit of oil on the rear differential, but all the components of structure and suspension are cartoonishly huge. We're talking thick steel here to protect our troops and the bullet holes under here serve as drain holes. Coil springs, big ones, are the main mode of suspension on the independent front and back. Drive-Ability This is next level for those of us who played with toy army men in the mud. The clickety clack of the diesel surges this beast forward, not with enormous speed, but with plenty of torque and the big tires roll along the tarmac of our test loop and we dare anyone to get in our way, knowing full well we won't see another car. At any rate, the limited functions provided on this purpose built pickup all work as intended.
