Design for the Allante was inspired by European models and the car represented a departure from angular design and was the first two person roadster produced by Cadillac since the series 355 in the 1930's. Exterior This straight shouldered car with softly rounded edges is covered in two stage Euro Red paint while composite headlights definitely point to the European influence and the flush tail lights are decorated with white lines, a stylized addition that resembles frosted glass. On the front fenders, the coveted Pininfarina crest, a symbol that appears on some of the finest cars in the history of the automobile. Our black canvas top has a glass window and is in very good condition and so are the 16-inch chrome wheels with both fronts missing the Cadillac crest and center cap. Tires are fairly new with a mid 2021 date code and with the top down, the raked windshield becomes more pronounced and the flat deck lid sheds air like a plane's wing. Upon close inspection, we find imperfections that include rock chips on the hood, various chips and scratches throughout, a few dings on the polished trim of the bumpers, and scrapes on the chin spoiler. Interior The door panels put black materials in an angular presentation that includes a carpeted corner while leather tall bucket seats combine luxury and sport, showing some slight compression and wear on the driver's side and scratches and staining on the other. Plush black carpet covers the floor, protected up front with carpeted mats and it continues cleanly on the package shelf and rear wall behind the seats. Up front, the black steering wheel leads to analogue gauges. The period switchgear is especially evident on the center stack, canted toward the driver and looking very much like a switchboard with dozens of buttons that control climate, the radio, trip computer, and AM/FM/Cassette/CD player. Get to know this panel because you don't want to be searching for the matching black buttons at 70 miles per hour. Black plastic housing holds the leather wrapped shifter on the floor while the trunk is finely finished, including the inside of the decklid, with charcoal carpet wall to wall. Drivetrain Here we have the 4.6 liter Northstar V8 rated at 295 horsepower, fuel injected, and mated to a 4T80E 4-speed automatic transmission. It's all transverse mounted and drives the front wheels through 3.71 gears. Undercarriage Clean underneath with minimal surface rust, the usual metal oxidation, and some residual oils on the otherwise clean pans. A single exhaust flows through the original muffler and out a tailpipe that splits at the end for two tips. Power disc brakes are at all four corners and both ends have independent suspension with 4.5 link up front and coil springs in the back. Drive-Ability The Allante provides a comfortable cabin with luxury cruising in mind, and we set out with the Northstar humming on all 8 cylinders. There's decent power underfoot and handling is quite good with 225/60R16's at each corner. The car might disagree, however, as the Service Ride Control light is illuminated. We also note the turn signal stalk is broken. Beyond that, this Cadillac's functions all operate as intended.
