This car was driven by the original owner for 27 years in Massachusetts.  The second owner, from Rhode Island, had a 40 car collection where he stored his cars in an environment-controlled facility - he purchased this car in 1966 - did annual maintenance and then the upgrades to paint, upholstery and top all to factory specifications in 1993. He had this car in his collection for 53 years.  I have not found any signs of rust anywhere in this car. The floorpans look to be original with no signs of any patching. The engine runs smooth and the car drives great. The engine was given a tune up in 2019 along with a new brake master cylinder. The interior looks immaculate. I haven't had the chance to put very many miles on this car, but have really enjoyed what I have done so far. We will have this car serviced and safety checked soon, but I don't think it will need much. The car drives like it looks, smooth running, quiet, easy steering and shifting. This would be a great car for any parade or car show. Very rare, may be only a couple of hundred of this original condition model left in the world. We sold this 1939 in 2020 and we just bought it back only because he ran out of storage area we were happy to get it back it's a great car hardly any miles on it and he went through the brakes even replace the brake lines so that's all new. After the low profile of the car registers in your brain, your eyes take in the Tangelo pearl paint capped by black and complemented by flames on the fender that have enough black in their flares to present a well coordinated match. The top's been chopped, the doors have been shaved, and the grille's been stretched and customized to yield to the newly shaped nose that's flanked by teardrop headlights. The minimalist back houses oblong tail lights and oval exhaust tips while imperfections include some touches up chips and scratches, mostly on the edges of the front bumpers.  Interior Wildly contoured tan and black leather rest in a door that's painted like the outside, here with green trimmed flames rising up and both reverse opening doors are show ready which is the overall theme here. Black and tan bucket seats are uniquely stitched and the layout is mirrored on the back bench seats and color adopted by the sidewalls, headliner, and foot pads in the footwells over black carpet. It's backed by a 4L60E 4-speed automatic transmission that routes power to a Ford 9" in back.   Undercarriage It may be the backstage area, but it's no slouch underneath where the tubular frame, rear axle, and suspension parts are all painted to perfection with Tangelo, and the rest is clean and dry. Headers send down the dual exhaust which meet a pair of FlowMaster mufflers and continue to the back while power disc brakes are found front and rear. Suspension consists of a Mustang II front end with airbags, and ladder bars in back with the requisite air bags there as well.   Drive-Ability We think this the level of showmanship that you'd want to trailer to distant shows, but for nearby events, it's a cool drive. We warm up to the chop as the LS1 puts out a sweet exhaust note and the car rolls nicely through the test loop. It doesn't quite feel like anything else, and why should it, it's completely unique. During our short drive, we note the tach, horn and odometer are not working but all other functions operate as they should. A trim piece breaks up the Tordo Red paint on the long panels, but the door handles have been shaved and the rocker panel color keyed to create a flowing body. A United Pacific style traffic light viewer is on top of the dash, showing some cracking but likely still functional and helpful in a car with narrow windshield. Tan carpet covers the floor and footwells nicely and the black headliner is clean and fully intact. The big trunk is uniformly black and also clean. Power disc brakes are up front with power drums in back and suspension consists of coil springs in front and leaf springs in back.  Drive-Ability The trusty 350 comes to life and provides a sweet exhaust note from tail pipes that are about a block away. Meanwhile, the engine provides good power but the brake pedal has excessive travel and the car then surprises us with an abrupt stop. It has a Flathead V8 from 1946 and the visor has been signed by Beach Boys legend, Mike Love. The car is the recipient of several Best of Show awards. Exterior Let's do the impossible, ignore the wood for a minute, as we gaze upon the Tucson Tan paint that smoothly coats the incredible steel front end of the car with its forward pointed hood and unique grille configuration, both of which set this car apart from anything of the era. The wrap around trim piece on the fender, when you really stop to look at it, is a lovely addition and complements the nose trim that sweeps back to the cowl. This side trim picks up again on the tan rear fenders and creates a continuity broken only by the spectacular wood panels. Mahogany framed in Birch is simply breathtaking and the artisan skill used to bend wood to contour to fenders is exhibited with excellence on this car. Destination decals and many others are affixed to the back windows and if you have time after admiring the wood, you will have lots of fun stuff to read. The color matched 16-inch wheels wearing Coker white walls are very nice and so is the rest of the wagon, and we could not find any glaring exterior flaws. Interior The great thing about Woodies is that the wood is on the inside too! And this one has a little extra with mahogany panels on the doors surrounded by the honey colored wood and it's like a rolling piece of fine furniture. Brown vinyl bench seats occupy the first and second row and are nicely stuffed and stitched in immaculate condition, made by the LeBaron-Bonney company. More Tucson Tan on the 2 spoke steering wheel which leads to a simple brown dash with a narrow band of horizontal gauges in chrome housing and bakelite knobs down below. That chrome strip spans the dash and houses a deco style clock on the passenger side. There's an AM radio onboard and a two gauge pod below the dash. Wood kick panels are in the footwells and a knit mat covers the floor, along with clear plastic mats. The ceiling is a spectacular lattice work of wood, dripping with shine and extending the length of the wagon. The cargo area wears a knit mat which shows some discoloration from usage. Drivetrain Earthtones aside, we're hit with a big blue 239ci flathead V8 under the hood which is clean, fed by a 2-barrel carburetor, and rated at 100 horsepower. A 3-speed manual transmission is augmented by a Columbia Overdrive unit mounted on the left side of the steering column. Drum brakes are supplied at all four wheels. Undercarriage Nice and clean underneath where the big X-frame is bathed in black and surface rust is nowhere to be found. There's some oil on the transmission and a bit of residual oil on the rear diff, but otherwise a clean and dry underside. Transverse leaf springs make up the suspension front and rear and dual exhaust encounters slim stock style mufflers before exiting out the back via chrome tips. Drive-Ability The cabin is not unlike a Polynesian tiki bar with hula dancers on the dash, flower leis hanging from the mirror, and wood construction all around. The flathead V8 starts up without hesitation and off we roll in this tall wagon with lots of airy space inside and big slab sides on the outside. She tracks straight and provides good visibility, even out the back where decals frame the windows. On our report card, we note the following things as inoperable. The exterior lights, the turn signals, the horn, and the trip odometer. All other functions operate as they should. This 1939 Ford Convertible Sedan was originally built by Hotrod Hall of Fame builder, Dick Kraft between 1945 and 1948 in California. It ran at El Mirage dry lakes in 1947 and did the measured quarter mile at 112.52 mph. The car was frame off restored in 2003 and is painted the original Mexicali Maroon. The non removable top was made by the original Carson company in 1948 and was recovered in 2003. It is able to be removed but the current design doesn't allow that to be done like Carson's more modern tops. The front and rear bumpers are off a 1937 Desoto and the rear taillights are from a 1941 Studebaker. The front headlights are original 39 Ford equipped with Halogen lamps. The hood has been louvered and looks great. This car is powered by a 1948 59AB 286 cubic inch Flathead V8. The motor has an Eske cam, Ross pistons, adjustable lifters, new valves, new 130 amp alternator, 3 5/16 bore, 4 inch stroke, a Mercury crank shaft and new Offenhauser heads with light port & relieve. The intake is by Thickson equipped 2-2 barrel Edelbrock 94 carburetors. It is topped off with a very cool Thickson air breather and has been rebuilt by Flathead expert, Bud Lee less than 200 miles ago. During the rebuild the block was vatted and oil passages were drilled out with the entire oil filter system being redone. The motor is backed up with a 3 speed manual transmission and the original banjo rear end with 3:54 gears. The undercarriage is very clean and solid. It features a 3 inch drop axle with reverse eye leaf springs up front and in the rear. Rebuilt drum brakes provide all the stopping power needed and the dual exhaust runs all the way out the rear and sounds great. Keeping it cool is a new 1939 Walker radiator with electric puller fan and shroud. The beautiful interior is done in a roll/pleat fashion using Oxblood and Tan leather. With Daytona weave carpeting, the interior is a thing of beauty. Even the door panels and headliner are done in the same high quality leather. It has all new tinted glass and new weather-stripping throughout. The steering wheel is original and in great condition. It has the original headlight switch horn button that still functions properly. A set of new old stock gauges compliments the dash board and the glove box has been signed by Dick Kraft. The car won the "Timeless Street Rod" award at the Goodguys Lonestar Nationals in 2006 and has appeared in various magazines over its lifetime. Exterior A deep red, chromed belt line arrows, chrome bumpers, chrome accented pontoon styled fenders, 2 door Deluxe sedan will live up to the phrase "fanfare for the common man".  A nice set of original fenders, on all 4 corners, a split windshield framed in chrome, and a beautifully styled grille visually tell people you are to go to the front of the parade.  Black wall tires mounted on red painted steel wheels and adorned with chrome hubcaps and dish edges keep you rolling down the road.  All good glass and that nicely rounded rear and another curved chromed bumper below and we have a real original unmolested classic ready to cruise down main street. Interior Gray and small checked white broadcloth upholstery covers the sprawling super comfortable front split back bench seat and twins itself on the rear bench that stretches from B pillar to B pillar.  The same motif is incorporated into the doors mid panels with plain gray uppers and lower strip of lime green carpeting.  All this is with a peppering of chrome for the door releases, window cranks, and vent window latches.  A large black steering wheel presents with a restored and polished to the nines chrome horn ring with the FORD logo emblazoned in the center.  This wheel fronts an art deco style metal dash, peppered with ribbed chrome and machined aluminum knobs.  Round gauges house a gold number accented speedometer and gold numbered clock.  4 rectangular gauges also front the wheel and monitor vital engine functions.  Just below the dash are a set of dual aftermarket gauges. A modern heater/Vintage AC system is mounted under the dash for cool cruises and an AM/FM/Cassette player is now mounted in the dash.  Lime green carpet floods the floors showing nary a mark and is topped with gray carpeted floor mats and a light gray cloth headliner hangs tightly above.  A shout out to the trunk which follows suit with flawless lime green and gray carpeting. Drivetrain After opening the  hood we are greeted with a massive clean and like new 255ci of 1950 Mercury flathead beauty.  It has a Schneider Racing camshaft  with a grind number of 248F along with a pair of Offenhauser aluminum heads to up the pony count.    We note the chromed coolant tubes and a 12-volt electrical conversion done for easier starting, better lighting and a modern stereo.  Also, the open air cleaner covering is chromed.  Newer wiring is on as well as a  firewall mounted oil filtering system.  On top is a Holley 4-barrel carburetor, and on back a 3 speed manual transmission.  The rear axle operates from 3.78 gears.  Dual exhaust with stainless steel mufflers are now on.  Undercarriage The consignor states that the previous owner had done all of the restoration with his wife, and the caring shows.  Underneath we see rust free black painted steel and red floor pans with no road dirt on them.  Transverse leaf spring suspension is found at both the fore and aft of the car to provide a comfy ride.  Power drum brakes are seen all around to provide the woah when the time arises. Drive-Ability The car started instantly and came into an idle without any coaxing.  Acceleration was sufficient and braking was as expected.  This car handled our test track with ease, and it was a joy to listen to modern music all the while feeling the discerning common man.  A plus on all fronts with the exception of the horn not honking, the radio tuning on but belting out no tunes, the speedometer not tracking mph and the clock only being right twice a day. Yes, baby's got back, and it's a wall of Alabaster flanked by two modest tail lights, now LED equipped.  Wide, articulated fenders loom over 15-inch polished American Racing Torque Thrust wheels with staggered size tires that result in a slightly raked stance.  Imperfections include some bubbling on a taillight housing, corner issues near the door hinges, cracked paint in seams, various minor scratches, and some gaps and fitment that is less than perfect.  Interior Tan tweed door panels are framed in with a taupe painted header and a taupe carpet lower, while the attached hardware is painted to match.  The material continues on the power front bucket seats, borrowed from a Chrysler, high backed and modern, and the rear has a matching bench seat that fits perfectly and includes a center armrest, all looking clean.  A tilt column holds a 4 spoke steering wheel in front of a Bitchin' Products custom dashboard which places all of the gauges in a row towards the center of the simple, flat dash.  A JVS AM/FM/CD radio is embedded on the far right over some tweed covered panel doors that cleverly cover some knobs.  A floor mounted Hurst shifter rises above a rubber accordion boot over tan low pile carpeted mats that are in great shape.  So are the headliner and visors which create a dome over the contoured and tinted windows.  The trunk is completely upholstered and wears a Ford insignia.  Drivetrain Lift the big hood to reveal a slightly blinged driver quality engine bay with a 390ci V8 topped by a Holley 750cfm 4-barrel over a Holley intake manifold between a pair of chrome valve covers.  An old school B&M intake scoop envelopes the air filter and is a polished piece that adds more shine.  A Toploader 4-speed manual transmission is behind the engine sending power to the Ford 9" rear and 3.22 gears.  Disc brakes are found behind all four wheels.  Undercarriage Basic and unremarkable underneath but generally clean and driver quality.  We note some oil under the engine including oil pan, flywheel cover, transmission, and transmission crossmember.  No surface rust of any significance exists underneath, and wheel components lack any major grease build up.  The dual exhaust flows back to a pair of glasspack style mufflers and then exits through steel pipes in the back.  Suspension consists of coil springs up front and leaf springs in the back.     Drive-Ability This cozy cocoon provides a clean and comfortable perch and with a little prime of the Holley with our right foot, we press the clutch with our left, start the engine, and put it in gear.  She sounds great and offers good visibility, save for the C-pillar blind spot due to the small rear window.  The car has good power, adequate braking, and decent handling.  Everything that needs to function does and we can't wait to get this one a new caretaker!  Here's a car with enough room to take the kids and their karate equipment to class, and enough classic lines and show worthy specialness to take it to cruise night, Cars and Coffee, and other places where car people gather.  Maybe you'll even garner a few trophies that you put next to your karate tournament trophies!  In any event, it's a well sorted '48 in a fine color, comfortable interior, and capable drivetrain.  Classic Auto Mall is home to more than 1,000 classic and collectible vehicles for sale via consignment in a climate controlled 336,000-square foot showroom (that's more than 8 acres!). Part of this popularity could no doubt have been attributed to Eugene "Bob" Gregorie's influence on the stylists who penned this design while he was chief of Ford's design department, a post that he held from 1935 to 1943. It was a freshening up of a styling concept first introduced in 1939 by the addition of a new front end design. Sealed beam headlights were offered for the first time by the automaker on the 1940 model. Aside from being a major safety improvement, their design contributed considerably to the new look. For consignment, a custom Ford business coupe. Slightly modded and upgraded, refreshed with new materials and designs, and a built flathead V8 to make it loud and proud. An all-steel car, all buttoned up and retaining all of its Art-Deco styling for the aero look. A "phat" fat Ford if you will. Exterior Bathed in Jade Green Metallic paint, we see straight slab steel panels, rounded front quarters, and a small running board connecting to a smaller rear fender. Rounded is the key word for the design of this car. From the front bumper to the rear bumper, we note nothing else but curvaceous curves. The backs of said bumpers have been darkened and now make an interesting reflection on the grille and front and rear fenders. It took me a while but 'tis the reflection of the back of the bumper in those grilles. A tall beaked hood floats above the vertical ribbed V curved grille, and dual side grilles flanking it. Headlights are embedded into the front fenders with large bezels that also house the high mounted signal markers. On the rear are shiny sergeant stripe bezels and lenses. A rounded trunk which is very spacious is very cleanly refinished with a rubber mat between the tail lighting. Rounded corner side windows and a rear oval window are noted to be cut onto the body and accentuate the rounded body lines. 14 and 15-inch Torque Thrust wheels with chipped black paint are on the front and rear respectively. These are wrapped by 205/70R14's in front, and larger N50-15's on back. Interior A swing of the large doors and we can shake hands with smooth black vinyl with a nice tuck and roll insert which is defined by white piping. Chrome actuators are on as well as rocker switches for the power windors. The sills are painted in gloss black. Looking towards the front seat, in low back split bench styling with smooth bolsters, tuck and roll inserts, and more white piping are all covered in black vinyl showing nicely. Black carpeting covers the floors neatly and in the center is an undulating piston topped shift lever. A white rimmed 3 spoke steering wheel is fronting a black painted dash with a ribbed brushed aluminum cluster holding white face VDO gauges. This all metal dash is sprinkled with knobs and pulls as well as auxiliary gauges hanging below and has an aftermarket AM/FM/Cassette player in front of the passenger seat. The back of the compartment is now seatless and just covered with black carpeting. A wrinkled black vinyl headliner is floating above. Drivetrain A lift of the big bulbous hood, and we have engine bling bling blinding us. It's now a stout 255ci flathead V8 courtesy of a 1953 Mercury. This has beautifully cast ribbed Offenhauser aluminum cylinder heads and an Edelbrock dual 2bbl intake manifold up top. Gray wiring snakes its way to each cylinder and we note a 12 volt conversion has been performed along with having a chrome alternator installed. On the back is a 3-speed manual transmission borrowed from a 1936 Lincoln Zephyr. A Ford 8-inch rear axle has been put on to handle the tire turning. Undercarriage All very clean and rust free with a solid drilled X frame supporting the car with ease. Floor pans and rockers are excellent as are toe kicks and inner fenders. A solid axle and transverse leaf spring suspension in front and a leaf spring rear suspension are seen, as are disc brakes upfront and drum brakes on back. A clean and dual exhaust system with Turbo mufflers snakes its way from the engine to the X frame crossover where it continues on to end in chrome tips under the rear bumper. Drive-Ability While capable of running, our consignor states that the fuel system needs some work. Some steel and rubber lines will need replaced before you can go hot rodding. Here we have a custom car, modded with a beautiful looking and powerful 255ci V8 engine, with added bling, eye candy interior and solid steel Jade Green Metallic exterior in beautiful sculpted round form.
