This was the first year of the CBX and this one wears a different engine case guard and replacement muffler, but it is otherwise just as it rolled out of the Honda showroom 46 years ago. As with any vehicle out of long term storage, some wrenching will be required before you can hit the road and show circuit. Exterior Approach this bike from the side, and its compact and well designed profile will impress, here with a silver painted tank and apron augmented by a red and black pinstripe, picked up by the red X of the model emblem on the side. The front fender is silver and the rear, what's visible, is black which coincides with the bold black racing stripe on the tank and apron. Move towards the front of the bike, and your attention will be drawn to the six, yes six, chrome headers emitted from the wide engine that extends well past the forks on each side and is protected by a crash bar, also chrome. The black vinyl seat has room for two and is in very nice shape while five spoke wheels, 19-inch front, 18-inch rear, are fittingly sporty for this bike. Functionality Plastic housings holds the switchgear on the handlebars with some slight patina and faded embossed painted lettering, while multi colored buttons and toggles help keep them distinguished. Textured rubber grips hold black clutch and brake levers next to black mirror posts and housing. Red shows up again in the numbering on the speedometer, odometer, and ammeter, all encased in the same housing along with colorful and labeled indicator lights, a little dusty but fully intact and complete. Drivetrain Here's the magic! Stuffed into the frame is a 1047cc DOHC inline 6 cylinder rated at a whopping 105 horsepower and fueled via six 1-barrel 28mm Keihin carburetors. The 5-speed manual sends power to the rear wheel via chain drive and disc brakes are on both wheels. The dual exhaust flank the bike on each side and suspension is comprised of an air assist telescopic fork in front and an adjustable dual damping swing arm in back. This is a garage kept example with a six cylinder engine and 118 horsepower.    Exterior Bold and black, the large front fairing on the bike contains sizable dual headlights flanking and intake duct under the windshield, and turn signals are integrated into hand guards. The front fender is an artful combination of black wheel covers and metallic trim that matches the front forks, all capping off the 18-inch wheel. Behind it, fog lights are housed in argent casing under just beyond the air ducts on the lower part of the fairing. Leather bucket seats, stacked and adorned with low backrests fall in line and create a sizable  perch for both passenger and driver, with armrests doing double duty as speakers in the back. In back, both the upper case and side saddle style hard cases have tail lights, a third brake light, and integrated turn signals providing car-like visibility to other travelers on the road. Beautiful chrome pipes are as much part of the mechanics as they are aesthetics. Imperfections include some oxidation on the wheels, several dings and dents on the bottom and exhaust covers, and scuffs in those locations as well.  Functionality More car-like qualities are found in the instrument cluster which could have been lifted from your average Accord, large, round and readable and including an electronic read out screen. The sound panel includes options for AM, FM, CD, Aux, and CB/intercom systems, displayed in large illuminated buttons. Cruise control switches are on the right handle while lights, horn, and sound system controls yield to your left thumb. Headlights and foglights have their own panel on the left side and a hazard switch is included. Two antennas flank the rear cargo hold.  Drivetrain A liquid cooled 1832cc opposed six cylinder is on board with electronic fuel injection and a 5-speed manual transmission that includes reverse as a 6th gear. It has an electric starter, a hydraulic clutch, and is shaft driven. Disc brakes are found on the front and back wheels. The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, (OPEC), put an embargo on foreign oil imports between 1973 and 1974, which tripled the price of gasoline, to $1.19, by 1980. With the looming gas crisis, and American interest in a smaller car to get around in cities was burgeoning thus benign the Japanese car maker invasion. Hitting our shores in 1972 this beginning wave of the aforementioned invasion began mostly with Honda who Americans were familiar with as a motorcycle manufacturer. For consignment, an early version of the Honda 600. She's restored and will need some TLC especially on the exterior. The interior retains its shine and may have been restored. A piece of history right here on the shores of Classic Auto Mall. Exterior Possibly less than a third of size compared to the typical American car of the day, this 600 is all steel and all bathed in blue. There are various areas of the bodywork that are showing surface rust, and some invasive rust. This is particularly true on the cars bottom end but not limited to here. The chrome is pitted and some rust has invaded it as well. Badging is suffering from peeling off of the shiny coatings. The car is a full glass door rear hatchback with a short hood and front engine. The gaps are inconsistent but the glass is all in good original condition. 10-inch silver painted steel wheels have a central H badge hub on them and are wrapped with 145SR10 rubber from early 1990. Interior Entering through either side of the long doors, access is surprisingly easy. These have a black vinyl panel in them and a simple actuator and crank and an upper handle sill pull. Weather stripping seals are dry rotted and door bottoms suffer from slight rust. Inside, high back buckets are in very nice condition and sport textured knitted tuck and roll inserts, and smooth vinyl bolsters and headrests. A similar pattern small rear bench is behind these buckets. Upfront, a nicely preserved original dash is in and this shows plenty of square and rectangle design. Sweep gauges in the round are in and some pulls and knobs. An AM radio is in the center and protruding from the lower portion of the dash is the stick shift lever, it's not from the floor, which is different. Worn black carpeting is in the floors and above is a smile short headliner that has an upper console in the center emanating from the windshield and between soiled visors. Drivetrain Under the hood is a 598cc 2 cylinder engine. It has a Keihin 36 1-barrel carburetor and a factory 4 speed manual transmission is on back. The car has a 6.23 final drive for the front wheels, and the exhaust is stock with resonators. The overall condition of the engine bay could be described as fairly clean, no rust, supple hoses and wiring and heavy corrosion on the engine's cast aluminum top. Undercarriage Sadly, there is more rust underneath with invasive rust on the rockers and some wheel well edges. Heavy surface rust is seen throughout. The floor pans are completely covering the area in the center of this underside and these appear to be solid. Independent coil springs are upfront and leaf springs are on back. Disc brakes are front and drums for the back. Drive-Ability The car started right up and ran smoothly. On the test track it moved and handled nicely. Unfortunately I could not get the full effect as the brakes are very soft and require extensive stopping distances. They do not pump up. Our consignor states that new fluid was put in so they may need some bleeding to be safe for driving. Other simple functions were working. An early example of what would become a very large car company whose products were known for their reliability. Many of earlier examples of these cars are known to have rust issues as there was none of this going on in Japan at this time of manufacture and the car suffers from it. It is a neat little car with a 2 cylinder engine. Gas crisis? What gas crisis?! Please contact us anytime for more information or to come see the vehicle in person. https://www.classicautomall.com/vehicles/5755/1972-honda-600 Honda https://www.hotrodhotline.com/forsale/vehicles/honda/other/1973/listing/211282 1973 Honda CB750 Nowadays, when somebody mentions the term "superbike", the first motorbike models that might spring to mind include the Suzuki GSX-R 1000 K5, Kawasaki ZX-10R, Honda Fireblade, Yamaha YZF-R1, Aprilia RSV-R, or if you're feeling a little more old school, the Suzuki Hayabusa GSX 1300R.  But before any of these powerful two-wheelers took to the streets, there's one bike that paved their path and ushered in the age of the superbike – the Honda CB750.  The Honda CB750 was finally released in America in 1969, with a retail price of $1,495 – well below the $2,800 to $4,000 price tag of current large motorbikes being sold in the U.S.  Such was the success of the CB750's release that, though an initial 1,500 yearly units were forecast for production, this swiftly leapt to a monthly figure, and later increased to a whopping 3,000 units per month.  After its launch, the Honda CB750 fast became a favourite in America, Japan, and indeed the rest of the world, and to this day it remains high on many "best of" motorbike lists. With its four-cylinder, single overhead cam, it remains a classic ride, and bikes continue to garner high sale and auction prices today due to their historical significance and limited availability. As Monte Python would say "And now for something completely different".  For consignment, the first of its kind superbike if you will, in all its orange metal flake original glory.  Purchased by our consignor after seeing it sitting in a backyard and unfortunately suffering with a bout of Lyme disease.  Our consignor couldn't drive at the time so he took it upon himself to rebuild the bike from the ground up.  Every moving part was cleaned and degreased and is now ready for another lifetime of enjoyment.  All metal/plastic surfaces are very good, and thanks to recent going over the engine kick starts on the first try when you get the fuel and ignition turned on! Toe the shifter down one time and it immediately clicks into gear, all it needs is a twist of the throttle and you're off! (Like a prom dress...if you will!).  Get her up to speed and toe down into the second gear and now you have a feel for the mechanicals, (5 gears of forward momentum are here so keeping up with traffic is a breeze).  The 736cc Single Cylinder OHV transverse 4 cylinder engine barely breaks a sweat and with a gleamed chrome bezel around the headlight, even an evening ride is possible.  This 4 popper is fed by 4-1bbl Keihin 28mm carburetors and for the exhale we see single chrome pipes coming from each cylinder and culminating into dual dual exhaust on each side.   A standard black vinyl seat provides room for too and the chrome fenders both front and rear along with the chromed suspension give just the right look baby bear.  A telescoping fork and rear swing arm suspension soak up most of the imperfections in the road and the disc front and drum rear brakes bring this hog to a stop easily.  Add in the 19 and 18" chrome spoke wire wheels and I'm ready to cruise Venice Beach.  All this was with my adult 235lb bulk sitting atop the showroom looking wide and long, buzzing around the Classic Auto Mall Parking lot, (AKA the CAM Racetrack!). A fab example of this bike, runs great, looks showroom new.  A totally fun ride for kids and adults.  I imagine myself in a beach community and riding this around constantly, it would definitely be a hoot..."
