      <description>1970 Mercury Cyclone Hardtop

For consignment, a 1970 Mercury Cyclone hardtop showing 85,599 miles, but the true miles are unknown due to exemption. This car has been owned since 2012 by our consignor who purchased the car in Florida with professional restoration taking place in Maryland soon after.

  Exterior
It is the front end that provides a captivating first look, deeply set quad headlights with upright marker lights that seem to pinch the middle, extruding that center gunsight grille, here with a Cobra emblem added. To make the most of oncoming air, a big front spoiler grabs from the ground and a hood scoop augments the grille intake, all for an aggressive look. A black stripe serves as the runway to the hood scoop and is surrounded in a sea of two stage Dark Ivy Green Metallic paint, contrasting with more black in the tail light bezels, side mirrors, and rear wing. The plain Jane Ford hubcaps give the car a sleeper profile, bolstered slightly with the white lettered tires, but dual exhaust in back tell a different story. Overall, the paint and trim is nice. Imperfections include a bent pinch weld behind a rear wheel, touched up chips, other chips including on the hood scoop, missing trim pieces ahead of the scoop, and a point of slightly misshapen window trim.

  Interior
It's 1970, so saddle vinyl frequently gets called up to the big leagues for an appearance, here beginning on the door panels with a tri-panel design and a scratch or two on otherwise clean doors. The split bench is clean and flat and invites your shotgun rider to get closer and the rear bench resides in a monochromatic environment of brown vinyl in excellent condition. A wood rimmed steering wheel fronts a horizontal instrument cluster that shows some patina with some peeling woodgrain applique, discolored trim, and hazy plexiglass. The padded dash pad takes in a series of white faced gauges in coves and canted towards the driver. Tan loop carpet covers the floor along with Cyclone embroidered mats while up top, a stitched headliner presents in nice shape. The trunk is rust free and wears a period plaid vinyl cover.

  Drivetrain
Now we're talking! Backing up that aggressive look is a 429ci V8 rated at 360 horsepower and fueled by a 4-barrel carburetor. It's mated to a C6 3-speed automatic that routes power the now legendary Ford 9" rear with 3.25 gears. Visually, the engine bay is clean and original looking.

  Undercarriage
Clean and dry conditions are found underneath with some typical surface rust and metal oxidation. The dual exhaust runs through FlowMaster mufflers and exits through polished tips. Power disc brakes are up front, power drums in the back and the suspension is fairly standard with coil springs in front and leaf springs in back.

  Drive-Ability
We slip into the slippery seat which is soft enough to conform and keep us in place, start the big V8, and move the column shifter into D. The exhaust note is nice, but we're also getting some exhaust leak noise. Meanwhile, the car has a notable miss but does have straight tracking, and responsive brakes. We note the horn and turn signals are not working but all other functions, including the AM/FM/Cassette player on board, work as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

What started with the 1964 Comet Cyclone, ended with the 1971 Cyclone with some Cobra Jet versions in the mix along the way. These are sinister looking muscle cars that are instantly recognizable but not all that common, and this is a very nice example. It's the car that also became the catalyst for GMC calling their now legendary truck the Syclone with an "S" as Ford still owned the Cyclone name in 1991.

      <title>1969 Mercury Cyclone</title>
      <link>https://www.hotrodhotline.com/forsale/vehicles/mercury/cyclone/1969/listing/225780</link>
<description>Details about our available 1969 Mercury Cyclone:
This sharp, 1969 Mercury Cyclone CJ Fastback for sale is finished in factory code correct White over original Dark Red Vinyl interior and comes with its appointed 428ci Cobra Jet V8 along with optional factory Ram Air Induction. This addition includes forward hood pins, Whisper-Aire air conditioning, Select-Shift C6 automatic transmission, power front disc brakes, power steering, AM/FM Stereo radio with rear speakers; Sports Appearance Group to include color-keyed outside racing mirrors, driver side remote adjustment, bucket seats with center console; all tinted window glass, styled steel wheels, and dash tachometer! It was even originally equipped with very rare rocker panel moldings, that were not reinstalled after a recent repaint of the exterior.

Exactly 200 of the 2,175 Cyclone CJs were painted white, and 105 of those had the Dark Red vinyl bucket seat interior, like the example seen here. Considering the list of impressive options that came on this car, we are extremely confident there is no other example like it! Built late in the 1969 production season, this particular Mercury Cyclone was finalized at the Lorain, OH plant on June 17th,1969, and delivered new to its first owner on June 23rd,1969, indicating it was special ordered. The selling dealer was Willett Lincoln-Mercury based in Decatur, Georgia where it started life in the dry southeast. It was most recently located in North Carolina with its former owner.

Upon arrival at the St. Louis Car Museum, this beautiful muscle car was thoroughly inspected and treated to a comprehensive service including replacement of the gas tank, sending unit, filler hose, and mounting hardware; new front wheel bearings &amp;amp; seals; new brake rotors, rear shoes/drums/brake cylinders, along with a brake fluid flush; new spark plugs/wires, distributor cap, rotor, &amp;amp; condenser; new heater core, hoses, &amp;amp; new coolant system; fresh engine oil/filter; rebuilt power steering cylinder with new hoses, idler arm bushing, upper control arms, lower ball joints, and tie rod ends; new air conditioning expansion valve and evaporator along with evacuating and charging the system with R134a refrigerant; replaced rear axle gear oil, and installed a new air cleaner. It already has a newer Holley 770cfm carburetor installed that has been properly tuned and is in excellent condition making this Cyclone Cobra Jet ready for proper use once again. The exhaust system and tires were replaced by the former owner in approximately 2023.

This very special classic Mercury is truly a one-of-one with its incredible list of factory options! A Deluxe Marti Report is provided with the car and included in our photos above. It easily proves to be a terrific muscle car investment and an equally solid weekend driver! With only a partial restoration, it retains many original attributes, supporting that this CJ has had a well-kept, garaged lifestyle since new. History of Mercury's Cyclone CJ428:
Produced for only one year, the 1969 Cyclone CJ was Mercury's answer to the Plymouth Road Runner and Dodge Super Bee, not to mention its counterpart from Ford. It was a stripped down, performance-inspired Fastback model intended to attract horsepower junkies. They would be equipped with a 428 Cobra Jet as standard, along with dual exhaust, Competition Handling Package with heavy duty springs/shocks, blacked out grill treatment, engine dress-up kit, hood stripes, and Traction-Lok 9" rear axle. All other equipment features were left as optional.

Whisper-Aire air conditioning was only available on CJs with an automatic transmission and a 3.00:1 Traction-Lok rear axle. Drivers wanting a four-speed and higher axle ratios would need to find another way to keep cool in the summer months. Given a slight reduction in performance with the taller gears and automatic transmission, along with a cost of more than 10 percent of the base CJ price, it's no surprise that air conditioning ended up a rarely selected option. Only 2,175 Cyclone CJ's were produced that year, making them exceedingly rare to find today. Finding one with this long list of additional options is nearly impossible!
