If there's one car that will always put a smile on the faces of owners and onlookers, it's the unique and friendly looking Nash Metropolitan. Exterior Fifties styling in miniature, the Nash wears a two tone coat of Sky Blue over Snowberry White and the colors are delineated with stainless trim that descends diagonally on the door to expand the blue over the rear quarter. A white canvas top hovers over the car with some of the typical graying, but fully intact. The slight bugeye face with diminutive grille and wrap around bumper adds to the Nash's cute demeanor and in profile, the short wheelbase on 13-inch wheels is consistent with the brand's reputation "as fun to look at as it is to drive". Out back, a more formal addition is the inclusion of a Continental type rear mounted spare, this one with a chrome rimmed white case and flanked by small, oval tail lights. Squeezing 50's style into a subcompact car results in a boxy little 149-inch car and this one presents very well. Imperfections include some touched up paint chips and scratches. Interior The two tone palette continues on the interior where vinyl door panels present smooth white uppers over black lowers, both presenting cleanly. The split bench artfully puts the angular white design on top as houndstooth cascades down meeting the lower bench which is wrapped in a white vinyl base. The small rear bench shares in the design and clean conditions with the vinyl covered inner fender wells serving as armrests. The simple dash begins with a sporty three spoke steering wheel framing a single gauge, the speedometer, in the center. Knobs, small horizontal gauges, and an AM radio fill the rest of the panel which is satin black in color and provides a storage shelf in lieu of a glove box. A triple gauge package has been added to monitor oil, water, and volts and it maintains the black and white palette, as does the black carpet and white vinyl that lines the footwells. Two 12 volt outlets have also been added to the dash. Drivetrain In contrasting green, we find the clean 1500cc inline 4 cylinder under the hood, fueled by a 1-barrel carburetor. A 3-speed manual sets the car in motion sending power to the rear axle with 4.60 gears. Undercarriage Driver quality conditions prevail underneath with some typical surface rust, drops of oil, oil sling, and some build up. There are areas of flaking invasive rust, areas of spray foam and some areas which were repaired while other parts encapsulated. Drum brakes are found at all four wheels and the single exhaust travels through a stock style muffler on its way to the back. Suspension consists of coil springs up front and leaf springs in the rear. Drive-Ability The brochure shows a Metropolitan parking between two enormous looking normal sized cars, and sitting inside it, it's easy to envision parking just about anywhere. The car is short, narrow, and provides decent visibility fore and aft. These were marketed as personal cars and it would be difficult to have more than one other person on board, think of the back seat as storage. Meanwhile the little four cylinder pulls us eagerly on our way around the test loop where the car shifts fine and tracks straight. There are limited features with this econo box, and each one of them works with the exception of the odometer and brake lights. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase. The Metropolitan was designed in Kenosha, Wisconsin. It was patterned from a concept car, the NXI, (Nash Experimental International), that was built by Detroit-based independent designer William J. Flajole for Nash-Kelvinator. As we say, and have said many times here at Classic Auto Mall, one NEVER knows what's coming through the door and this consignment proves that to the teeth. We give you a 1961 Nash Metropolitan couch, which is the ultimate Man/Woman cave accessory to relax on and watch the Nascar or F1 race on the big screen which resides in your garage with your car collection. Or in your living room as the ultimate conversation piece, I can tell you for sure you WILL be the only one that has one! NO TITLE-SOLD ON A BILL OF SALE ONLY Destined for the crusher, this 61 Metropolitan became the brainchild of a creative automotive man who conjured up the idea to have the ultimate conversation piece. The front of the car was demolished while the Continental rear of the sub compact remained intact. Work began by trimming any excess material and fashioning a larger rear seat than the factory stock rear seat. It is covered in marine grade vinyl which is white and surrounded by Redline, (red), painted steel from the original car, very apropos for the early 1960's. The wheel wells are the armrests and the couch/rear of the car, swivels on long posted lockable casters on the back and padded feet to level itself on virtually any surface in front. In the trunk, which now has become a stainless steel lined drink cooler, has a 2 inch thick high R value insulation within its confines. There is a drain plug to rid the cooler of excess water. Interior trunk lighting as well as the tail lights are LED and are powered by a 110v AC power supply which runs through a 12v DC converter. It measures 14.5 inches wide, by 36 inches long and is 14 inches deep which turns out to be about 4 cubic feet. Plenty of space to hold drinks and various food items to last at least a 500 mile race! "Hey bud grab me a beer from the trunk.." Overall dimensions are 58" w x 58" L x 41 " tall. A true concoction for an automotive aficionado, the ultimate convo piece and drink cooler service to boot. Fresh out of long term storage and buzzing around our Hallowed Halls here at Classic Auto Mall, (literally it could do that!), we present to you...drum roll please...a 1960 Nash Metropolitan 1500.  This is a hardtop version and has had a repaint at some point and is showing with flaws both on the exterior, interior, and undercarriage.  However, it's all there and could very well be the makings of your next project.  Restomod, concours show winner, possibly rat rod???  The choice is up to you. Please Note: NO TITLE-SOLD ON A BILL OF SALE ONLY Exterior So we have the smallest car with a feature ubiquitous to the largest car...the "Continental", (think big car), rear tire enclosure...go figure!  This metal bean has been refinished in a two tone aqua and white that presents with chips, inclusions, and cracks in the body work.  Exterior panels otherwise retain decently minded gaps for the steel.  An accentuated dip in the door and lower body bulge give a somewhat boat-like appearance to the body and what little chrome we see has dimpling or has been painted silver.  A white roof hovers over the aqua body and the roofline is just lovely, with the triangular "B" pillar holding fort for the curved rear glass.  Oval tail lights are flanking the rear mounted spare tire enclosure, wrapped in a black cover with a cream retainer.  This cream appears again on the painted egg crate oval grille with a single headlight mounted on the corner of each front quarter.  Beep! Beep! Interior The utilitarian door panels in black and white vinyl show some soiling and wrinkling on each side and house the window crank and door handle.  Chromed trimming separates the colors and adds some bling to the utilitarian look.  Slipping inside using my shoehorn, I'm on a front bench with a split back so one has access to the rear area.  These are covered in aqua vinyl and have tight tuck and roll inserts, smooth vinyl bolsters and a central smooth pattern.  They are in surprisingly good condition for the age and provide decent comfort for my larger frame.  Note the rear bench lower has been removed and we see the rear panel has a lock in the center which gives access to the trunk.  An original aqua dash in steel is fronted by a large 2 spoke black steering wheel and gives view to the nice chromed bezel surrounding a centrally located round speedo gauge cluster.  A nifty dial tuner and volume control radio is in the dash center and a few other simple knobs and pulls line up along the bottom.  Black carpeting is on the floors, and a stained white headlight hangs tightly above. Drivetrain A flip of the hood and we see the original 90.89ci BMC engine in 4-cylinder format with a black block and green valve cover and 1-barrel Zenith carb under the black air cleaner.  The engine and bay present as complete with a healthy dose of patina.  A 3-speed manual transmission is on back sending power to a 4.22 geared axle. Undercarriage Some patina, undercoating and surface rust make an appearance down below.  But the areas of concern are the flooring, rockers, crossmembers, and frame that are all suffering from invasive rust with some areas being in need of immediate remediation.  Independent coil sprung front suspension, and leaf springs for the back provide the ride.  Drum brakes are on all 4 corners. There are several cars here at Classic Auto Mall I just fall in love with, and this is one of them even needing the work it does.  I have a soft spot for these unique designs, and this one is definitely one of my favs.  Of course I'm also in love with our Mercedes choices as well as some of the mid 70's Corvette...my wife says I have trouble making up my mind, but I digress...Stay tuned!!  Keeping the unique original design and quirky looks, why not take this Metro under your wing and forget about "Super Sizing" it.
