The body is solid with the primary rust being below the driver’s side door. The brakes work, except for the parking brake. The paint is attractive, but there are imperfections. Personally, I like the character, but others may want the perfection of a new paint job. It has fresh engine and gear oil as well as new tires. With one exception, the headlights and tail lights work, as do the windshield wipers and interior fan. The interior is quite nice. The dash has a pair of cracks to address, but the rest of the interior is very nice. The interior seating is not original, but is an attractive modern/vintage style that ties in with the truck’s color scheme very well. Aside from the interior seating, it is mostly original and it gets a lot of admiring looks when driving around. It is currently registered and plated as an antique. This truck has been restored with originality in mind, achieved, according to our consignor, to a 99% level.  Exterior Two stage Apache Red coats this truck, a lovely color for this Lark fronted pickup truck that was intended to compete with the Ford Ranchero and Chevy El Camino at the time. As such, it has a relatively long bed which extends well past the rear axle. The trapezoidal grille is flanked by side markers that mirror the horizontal bars of the grille on a smaller scale and contour to the lines of the grille on one side and the round headlights on the other. The hood also contours, this time to the shape of the grille, with a slight rise in the middle capped off by a hood ornament that depicts a jet, and you don't want to be on the wrong side of it on the street. Proper Studebaker wheel covers are on the 15-inch red wheels wrapped in white wall tires. The paint and metal work are near excellent on the truck and imperfections are limited to a scratch a the tail light panel near the rear bumper. Interior With a conservatively styled exterior, we gain some flash on the inside as geometric patterns of red and black vinyl along with an aluminum panel that make up the door panels. The bench seat presents with red stitched inserts surrounded by black vinyl and is in great shape, with only minor compression shown. The standard steering shows some story telling patina, while the stitched black dash pad appears fresh and under it, a body colored metal dash housing a small meshed gauge pod and several knobs, all a working truck would need in 1961. An AM radio lives in the middle of the dash just above a glove box and ahead of the passenger, a round mesh feature on the dash is home to a speaker. The floor is covered with a low pile back carpet, the headliner with a perforated piece, and a large rear window affords great over the shoulder visibility and views of the black painted bed.  Drivetrain The bay holds a clean 259ci V8 with a 2-barrel carburetor and a horsepower rating of 145. It's backed by a 3-speed manual that routes power to a Dana 44 rear axle with 4.09 gears.  Undercarriage Super clean underneath with minimal surface rust and no leaks. The dual exhaust comes from the engine and meets a pair of FlowMaster mufflers before finding their way to terminating in the back. Leaf spring suspension is used front and back and drum brakes are also found at both ends.  Drive-Ability We found the truck to be a good runner, offering smooth and straight tracking, plenty of good visibility, and more than enough power underfoot. The low beams are not working and the amp light goes on when we hit the headlights. Meanwhile, all other functions operate as they should on this simple, and simply awesome Studebaker. Studebaker touted its "full size convenience and beauty, with features not found even on many expensive cars".  Exterior The unique shape combines boxy proportions with body lines that are both subtle as in the front fender, and quite pronounced like the rear fender's bump that continues to encircle the rear fascia over a central fuel cap. There's also a trim piece that rides the shoulder line of the car then swings around back where it bisects the tail lights and continues between them, becoming part of that trim. On the face, it's all trapezoids, from the bezels around the dual headlights to the grille itself and robust chrome bumpers occupy the front and rear. 15-inch Vision wheels spice things up a bit and carry 205/65R15 tires with a mid 2023 date code. Overall, the panels are straight; however, the paint, lenses, and some metal show its age and include some bubbling, cracking paint, surface rust, and chipped paint.  Interior The Studebaker S is stamped into the tan vinyl door panels, some of which show some looseness and a tear or two, but mostly intact. Brown vinyl surrounds cloth inserts on the bench seat up front and rear seat, and presents well with a stain on the passenger's vinyl upper and some looseness in the back seat noted. The two tone steering wheel and its horn ring show their age but hint at a unique style, fronting an intact dashboard with circular gauges in square sections, all subject to some patina and including the dash pad which has some damage. An AM radio sits front and center with white plastic push buttons and the adjacent glove box looks slightly askew. Tan loop carpet covers the floor, the white perforated headliner up top is nice, and the trunk is barren and shows use, carrying a spare tire. Drivetrain Under the hood, a driver quality 169.6 OHV inline six cylinder, rated at 112 horsepower and fueled via 1-barrel carburetor. A 2-speed automatic sends power to the rear axle with 3.07 gears.  Undercarriage Surprisingly clean and simple underneath with some typical surface rust and some residual oil on the pan. Drum brakes are supplied to all four wheels and a single exhaust flows through a stock style muffler on its way to the back. Suspension is also basic with coil springs up front and leaf springs in the back.  Drive-Ability We roll this former economy car out on to the test loop where it provides decent power and decent visibility via its open and tall greenhouse. We note it pulls to the left but turn ins are just fine and braking is responsive as can be. The clock and radio are not working, but all other functions operate as they should and we fly this Lark back to the mall. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.  Exact numbers are hard to come by on this one, but there may be as few as 6,000 Commanders produced in 1964 making a four door sedan a rare bird indeed! This one has great bones and could easily be brought into show level condition with some cosmetic work. You can also watch on YouTube! https://www.classicautomall.com/vehicles/7821/1964-studebaker-lark-commander-4-door-sedan Studebaker https://www.hotrodhotline.com/forsale/vehicles/studebaker/daytona/1964/listing/223858 1964 Studebaker Daytona R2 Convertible Tribute For consignment, a 1964 Studebaker Daytona R2 convertible tribute showing 32,477 miles which are not actual.  Only 48 actual Studebaker Daytona's from 1964 were combined the R2 supercharged V8 with a convertible top, so finding one is a proverbial needle in the haystack.  This is a faithful tribute to one rare unicorn.   Exterior The somewhat boxy body wears white on its base which is adorned with a black canvas convertible top accentuated by the black spear just below the shoulder line, pointed at both ends and bordered by metal trim.  Inset headlight bezels have angular sides that dictate the unusual shape of the grille and will likely not be mistaken for another brand due to the V-shaped edges, and it wears a Studebaker R2 badge.  In back, tail lights cap the protruding decklid while the latch panel is tucked under it and retains a prominent body fold that is a continuation of a rear fender accent which has a mirror line on the front fender, more visually muted on white paint.  Some contrast is brought in with the 15-inch argent gray American Racing Torque Thrust wheels, with polished rims and 215/75R15's at each corner.  The canvas top is in great shape and so is the metal work and emblems that include Daytona in script and a coveted Avanti R2 Supercharged oval.  Panels are straight, paint is great, and we could not find any glaring exterior imperfections on this rare car. Interior Contrasting with the white exterior, we're greeted with red vinyl door cards with simple embossed designs and a Studebaker dress plate.  Red vinyl covers the bucket seats and center console, presenting in excellent condition.  Same with the back bench that has a hideaway arm rest and button backed vinyl upholstery in good condition.  The red plastic steering wheel has ridged hand grips built in with a white upper and lower rim, while a robust, stirrup shaped horn ring rides the wheel.  Beyond the tachometer mounted on the column is an instrument panel that puts round gauges in square boxes of trim with white plastic toggle switches below in a woodgrain panel.  A bit of patina here but we love the original presentation along with the ivory knobbed AM/FM radio in the center where we also find an added boost gauge mounted below.  A stout metal shifter rides the hump in a polished base, all surrounded by plush red carpet that shows some fading on the upper surfaces, as is common in convertibles while foot wells retain sharp color.  The trunk is clean and covered with a loose fitting plaid mat which also encases the spare.   Drivetrain Here's the money shot!  Mounted atop the 289ci V8 is a bright orange Paxton supercharger taking center stage while a 4-barrel carburetor feeds this representation of an engineering showpiece which is backed by a Borg Warner 3-speed automatic transmission sending power to the rear axle and 3.54 gears.  Chrome valve covers and polished airbox further dress this engine which is clean and show worthy.  New brake pads have been added to the power disc brakes in front, while power drums are reserved for the back.   Undercarriage Driver quality underneath with typical use patina, some surface rust, and some drops on the transmission pan with residual fluid on the rear differential.  Dual exhaust runs from the engine to a pair of FlowMaster mufflers, into a stainless connector, then out to steel tailpipes that exit via polished tips just beyond the rear bumper.  Coil springs are found up front for suspension while leaf springs are out back.  Drive-Ability They say there's "no replacement for displacement" but that's not always the case and in 1964, forced induction was still a bit exotic.  The supercharger provides extra juice here and we take our place in the driver's seat and crank up the 289.  Even with the soft top up, visibility is quite good, and the large, clear rear window helps.  The car tracks straight with good acceleration as boost increases and its square stance and high walled tires provides smooth handling as well and the Daytona hints at some of its racing pedigree.  Meanwhile, all functional items check the boxes on this well sorted Studebaker.  While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.  Studebakers enjoy one of the most enthusiastic followings of any orphan brand and are some of the best documented cars for the era.  The build sheet reveals this stunning car was born without the go fast goodies but has been dressed up to honor one of the cars that is somewhat legendary in Studebaker circles.  You can eat your cake and have it too with this R2 look alike.  It's like buying a ticket to a tribute band, all the great music without the high price!  64V9157 64-1964 V-V8 2609-Sequential Unit Number Classic Auto Mall is home to more than 1,000 classic and collectible vehicles for sale via consignment in a climate controlled 336,000-square foot showroom (that's more than 8 acres!). Half were produced in South Bend, Indiana while the other half in Los Angeles. This is a South Bend car and was the top of the line. It's a stunning automobile, regal, indeed. Our consignor tells us about some new items added such as the battery, brakes and tires. Unless you're at a Studebaker meet, you're unlikely to encounter another at car shows or anywhere else for that matter. Exterior Velvet Black paint covers the extent of this large car, and the grille does show the extra shine with molding between the slots and the large rectangular piece in the center. The wraparound bumper with large bumper guards sits further outboard than in previous years and stainless steel rocker panel moldings and gravel guards were specific to the Regal Deluxe. Fender ornaments with lights leading the way are beautifully streamlined and designed. The hood ornament resembles a bomb while the Studebaker crest sits boldly on the nose. Everything is in wonderful condition. The front fenders also feature a vent behind decorative slats and the rear fender includes skirts over the rear wheels. The ivory canvas top has a bit of discoloration, a few loose threads, and a small hole or two, but is in good condition with its glass window in place. The rear taillights have distinctive four segments that helped differentiate it from the Studebaker Champion. We note a scratch near one of the skirts as the only defect worthy of documentation. Interior Oxblood, our favorite interior color, colors the vinyl that is stretched over the door panel in a simple, smooth design. The large split bench seat is gleaming and smooth as well and the rear bench which is narrower due to the soft top hardware, is in beautiful condition. The ivory colored Deluxe Regal steering wheel is stunning, three spokes with a horn ring floating inside the larger circle. Three large gauges with black faces and ivory art deco style lettering reside in a machined metal backing, (Trans Am owners take note!), below which we find knobs and buttons for various functions and simply labeled. The center area with a metal slatted speaker face is on top of an AM radio with a wonderful and robust metal face. The black painted dash contrasts with the red low pile carpet piece that covers the floor. The large trunk is clean and partially covered with a gray mat and home to a spare tire mounted upright. Drivetrain The car is equipped with a 226ci L-head inline 6 cylinder engine rated at 94 horsepower and mated to a Borg Warner T86E 3-speed manual transmission with overdrive which our consignor states works! Power is transferred to the rear wheels where 4.55 gears make the spin work. Drum brakes are found at each corner. The engine bay appears very original, and the block is painted the original olive green. The glass jar of white lubricant for the working automatic lubricator is a fascinating throwback and rare to find intact. Undercarriage For a car that's 75 years old, it's remarkably clean and dry underneath. We are not sure of true mileage, but it's potentially very low, and the underside is evidence of that. We see normal surface rust on untreated metals, but no invasive rust is noted. The single exhaust enters a long stock style muffler and then heads back to exit beyond the rear bumper and a decorative exhaust deflector is on the very end. A transverse leaf spring is used up front while leaf springs in north south configuration are out back. Drive-Ability Word in the mall is that this car runs smooth, and the rumors were true. The engine is quiet and smooth and the ride itself is soft and luxurious, all these years later. This model would have been about $2,300 in 1949, a bit more than the other models in the line and was a statement that showed "you've arrived". Well, we arrive back at the garage with smiles because this car and all its functional pieces, is still a mark of success. Maybe you're browsing the mall or the mall's website for a vintage Cadillac, Ford, or Chrysler. And lucky you, you've stumbled on this Studebaker and although you've never seen one, it strikes you, as it did us, as something special. There's a large Studebaker fanbase out there and supportive clubs, and only about 11,000 Regal Deluxe convertibles were produced and very few remain, especially the best of the lot, the '49's. So, dig in and check this one out. It's a fine example.
