Famed Swamp Rat 32 Arrives at Museum “Big Daddy” Don Garlits’ unconventional Swamp Rat 32 mono-wing dragster was an attention-grabber in the 1990s, and the car continues to turn heads today. When building the car, Garlits and chassis builder Murf McKinney came up with a solution for wing-strut collapse and the cars moving around when the clutch locked up as Top Fuel dragsters went faster and faster. The mono-wing dragster was their solution to killing two birds with one stone. In testing, the car went very straight, but in deploying two experimental drag chutes, Garlits suffered a detached retina, so he turned to 1989 NHRA Funny Car world champion Bruce Larson to drive. The dragster won the NHRA Best Engineered award at the Southern Nationals and was Top Eliminator at the IHRA Fall Nationals in Bristol in October 1992. Now, for a limited time, museum visitors can see this amazing dragster. |
