14th Annual Syracuse Nationals July 19-21, 2013
Syracuse, New YorkFriday, July 19, 2013
Right Coast Association's 14th Annual Syracuse Nationals held on July 19-21 2013, started on the last day of a record heat wave in the northeast. It was in the low 90's on Friday, then dropped under 90 degrees for the first time for the following days for a welcomed relief.
Saturday was cooler, with intermitten showers. A record number of show cars came to the show this year. 7,882 show cars entered the show; that's about 100 more than last year (2012). Mike Wolfe on Friday, and Danielle Colby-Cushman, from History Channel's American Pickers was there on Saturday and Sunday. Candy Clark (Debbie from American Graffiti) was also there this year. Gene Winfield was on hand, to hand pick the recipient of the Cherrished Winfield Award from the previously narrowed field of 6 contestants.
Artie's Party raised about $70,000 this year for the Ronald McDonald House of Central NY. The Frantic Ford Nostalgia Funny Car was parked out front of the building where Artie's Party Charity Auction was held and The Ford Mach 1 Mustang was started 3 times a day, at the start of each auction to draw a crowd. The Frantic Ford Team, which includes Hotrod Hotline's #1 photographer, Big Al Liebmann, even sold "seat time" in the funny car during the start ups to add an additional $5000 for the charity.
This year, an added attraction was an autocross track for registered cars and trucks to test their driving skill. I was at the show for two days this year. Met up with fellow HRHL photograper Walt Smoleneski on Friday for lunch and then again for dinner. But missed the lunch meeting on Saturday because I was way down the far end of the fairgrounds when I realized I was already late, so I continued taking pictures of the rat rods and doodlebugs while listening to The Hillbilly Band, Blue Ribbon Bastards, and watching a young couple tear-up the dirt floor dancing to hillbilly beats! HOPE YOU ENJOY MY PICTURES!
