Ol' Daze Drags - Island Dragway
Great Meadows, New JerseySunday, September 8, 2013
It started off as a dreary day for drag racing. The 'Ol Daze Drags', sponsored by the East Coast Rod & Custom club, is a great annual event and we didn't wish to miss it. Our ride was a 'hardtop only' 62 Corvette with the top off so we were a bit concerned.
As we got closer to Island Dragway, the weather became very cooperative. The crowd was pretty large and the noise was intense. The time trials were well underway with eight lanes in operation. The car show was also pulling in quite a few vehicles. As the day progressed, we ran into several friends and new acquaintances which only added to the enjoyment of the day. Lightning had struck the timing lights through the night so the only indication of the winner was a red light on the time/speed indicate panels on the side of that winner - but the announce was well versed in calling out the speeds and times. That was the only problem with the day - small as it was. We only had one casualty - one of the guys blew his engine and he needed some help to load the car into his trailer.
My count at the car show was an estimate of 75 - 80 cars.
All in all, it was a fine day - the weather worked, the car ran well and the trip home was delightful - with the top off!!
