For the second year in a row, the Mississippi Beach Cruisers “Honoring our Veterans” Open car show had to defer to its rain date. Originally scheduled for May 10th the June 7th rain date actually set a new attendance record for the 13th edition of the annual show. One hundred ninety registered vehicles, a day filled with lots of sunshine, and of course a venue that spells patriotism from top to bottom. The Veterans Administration Health Services location in Biloxi, MS was the perfect backdrop to honor those who have sacrificed so much for our country. With shade provided by the majestic moss laden live oaks that the entire Gulf Coast is famous for, a mix of vehicles from the newest Camaro to the earliest Ford and everything in between graced the grounds. While participants displayed their “rides”, the heroes who are patients or residents and who are the reason for the show, were escorted by volunteers to admire the cars and in many cases to reminisce about the cars from their earlier days. What a treat for both participants and patients alike. As with any event, food is an important ingredient. This year being no exception, one of our local Boy Scout troops provided hamburgers, hot dogs and pulled pork sandwiches for participants, spectators, and the veterans. The event was a huge success and a check for all of the proceeds will be awarded to the recreation department of the V.A for use by the patients and residents as they see fit. As with any annual event, next year’s event is already on the minds of all involved, and maybe Mother Nature will cooperate and no rain date will be necessary.
