Woodward Dream Cruise
Royal Oak, MISaturday, August 19, 2017
Although the World’s Largest Car Event is always held on the third Saturday of August, it really is not a one day event. Throughout the spring and into the fall, activities evolve on Woodward Avenue, previously known as one of the street drag racing centers of the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s.
In fact, this year marks the return, for the second year, of “street legal” drag racing as one of the events before the actual cruise. The cruise covers 16 miles, through at least 7 cities that join in on the special event with activities of their own. With over 1 million people and 40,000 plus exotic cars, this has long been law enforcement’s ultimate crowd control training event, with departments represented from all cities in the main land. The epicenter is Woodward, and 13 mile where these pics were taken, this is also the city of Royal Oak which has had a long history of overly strict traffic law enforcement, especially during the cruise. Strangely, today I thought that they were actually lax, with a number of serious safety violations occurring seemingly unnoticed. Except for one parking ticket, there was no overt police activity when I was there until late afternoon. Enjoy the pics!
