Wavecrest Woodie Meet
Encinitas, CASaturday, September 21, 2019

For 40 years Woodies have been gathering at this event to celebrate the unique vehicle called the Woodie Station Wagon. Over the years, wood has been a material used in all cars, but mostly on the inside. As that need went away, a larger vehicle was built to carry luggage to the train station. This also used the surplus wood that had been grown for car interiors. The short-term life of wood as an exterior car shell soon made these Station Wagons obsolete.
Moonlight Beach at the end of Encinitas Blvd in Encinitas, CA has been the site of Wavecrest for the last 27 years. The tranquil setting was full of Woodies and crowded with interesting spectators. They come to this event for one of two reasons, the unique cars or the unique wood. Many of these beautifully crafted cars have used rare and exotic woods in their restoration. Some are original, some are restored, and some are a work of imagination. Woodies are very rare, this is the longest running and largest gathering of Woodies in the world. Woodies begin arriving in the wee hours and by 8:00 am there are around 300 Woodies of every size, shape, description on display. Throughout the day, from the Wavecrest stage, The Mar-Dels provided top notch musical entertainment. The event finish’s with fabulous raffle prizes and awards for the best of the best and a beautiful Sunset.
