Deuces on 101
Buellton, CASaturday, October 12, 2019
The inaugural Deuces on 101 is officially in the books, the brainchild of Steve Lykken, his family and friends and a success all around!
Four hotels were used to house the entrants, with the Hampton Inn & Suites being the headquarters; Friday evening Mark Mendenhall opened the Mendenhall Museum of Gasoline Pumps for an outstanding BBQ, with the guests also being overwhelmed with the sheer size of the collection…a stop all enthusiasts should put on their bucket list.
Saturday, as you entered the Zaca Creek Golf Course (which was closed for the event) you were greeted by Steve, his family, close friends Bobby, Ken, Bob, Steve and many others…you drove past the Lykken collection of deuces as you parked on the grass, with several of the sponsors on hand with their deuces as well—John Manning with his hiboy and his roadster pickup next to Steve’s deuces…across the fairway Image Street Rods & Customs displayed their ’32 2-door Phaeton and a beautiful chassis destined for a deuce 3-window. With this being an all ’32 deal, Steve reached out to sponsors for items to raffle…Sid Chavers donated one of his beautiful Bop Tops, Brookville Roadster offered a deuce grille shell, with C.W. Moss sending an insert, all top of the line deuce items. Paul & Malena Martinez, RODDING USA Magazine were also on hand with their beautiful Deuce roadster pickup to cover the Deuces on 101 Show for a future issue, as well as photographing deuces for upcoming magazine features.
The day kicked off with Steve welcoming everyone, introducing some of the charities that would benefit from the show, as well as many of the friends and volunteers needed to pull this off--the short introductions concluded with Ken Partch’s beautiful song…setting the tone for the day.
The show--there were many body styles of the Deuce on hand, Al Clark, the wizard behind Deuce Days in Canada, drove his Tudor, as well as Terry Grant driving his 3-window, motored down from Vancouver. With the Bay Area Roadsters, California Roadsters, Central Coast Roadsters, L. A. Roadsters, Valley Roadsters and San Luis Roadsters providing a large contingent of roadsters…hiboys, fendered roadsters and roadster pickups, the show was truly a sight to behold, 165 Deuces on the grass!
While dates haven’t been set for the 2nd Annual Deuces on 101 for 2020, you can bet that once the word is out on this year’s event, the entry list will certainly grow…see you in 2020!
